Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Karakorum Highway and Chitral Valley tour?
Karakorum Highway and Chitral Valley is a 21-day small-group expedition through Pakistan's most spectacular mountain landscapes. You traverse the legendary Karakorum Highway, hike to Fairy Meadows for panoramic views of Nanga Parbat (8,125m), trek to Beyal Camp and optionally to Nanga Parbat Base Camp, cross the Deosai Plains (one of the world's highest plateaus), explore the Shigar Valley and three historic forts (Khorpocho, Baltit and Altit), walk out on the Hussaini hanging bridge over the turquoise Hunza River, and end in the Chitral Valley. Groups are capped at 16.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Pakistan?
This is an adventurous, off-the-beaten-track tour that requires a reasonable level of fitness and a spirit of adventure. It is not an entry-level group tour. If you are specifically drawn to one of the world's great mountain roads and want to experience Pakistan beyond the headlines, this tour is designed for you.
What is the difference between this and other Pakistan tours?
The Karakorum Highway and Chitral Valley (21 days) focuses entirely on Pakistan's northern mountain regions, combining the legendary KKH route with the Fairy Meadows hike, Deosai Plains, the Hunza Valley's forts, and the remote Chitral Valley. It is one of the most comprehensive Pakistan mountain itineraries available.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
The tour is best from June to September, when the Karakorum Highway and high mountain passes are fully accessible and the Fairy Meadows scenery is at its most vivid. July and August bring wildflowers to the Deosai Plains. The southern part of Pakistan is better visited October to April, but the northern routes on this tour are summer-only.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
Pakistan's mountain north requires specialist 4x4 transport, local guides with deep knowledge of highland routes, and accommodation at a range of properties from city hotels to mountain guesthouses and cabins. Running a safe, well-supported 21-day expedition through remote areas with a dedicated local guide is genuinely resource-intensive. Your price covers 20 nights accommodation, almost all meals (20 breakfasts, 19 lunches, 19 dinners), all transport by 4x4, a domestic flight, and the services of an experienced local guide throughout.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 20 nights accommodation in 2 to 4-star hotels, guesthouses and cabins, all transport by 4x4 jeep, a domestic flight (as per itinerary), 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers, services of a local English-speaking guide, and meals as listed (20 breakfasts, 19 lunches, 19 dinners).
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, drinks, personal expenses, tips, and any optional activities. Budget for personal spending across 21 days and for the optional Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek if you choose to do it. Your guide will brief current tip amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can hold a reservation, pay a deposit, or pay in full at booking. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate to strenuous. The hike to Fairy Meadows and Beyal Camp involves multi-hour hiking at altitude. The optional Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek is strenuous and requires good fitness. The Babusar Pass and Deosai Plains sections are at high altitude (over 3,000m in places), which can cause altitude symptoms. Road conditions on the KKH and mountain tracks can be rough and require full days of 4x4 travel.
How do you handle altitude on this tour?
Altitude above 3,000m can cause headaches, dizziness and nausea. The itinerary builds in acclimatisation at key points. Your guide monitors the group's condition. Anyone with serious heart or blood pressure conditions should consult a doctor before booking.
What if I am older or have a medical condition?
Be upfront with us at booking. The combination of altitude, rough road travel and multi-day hiking makes this a physically demanding tour. We recommend a full medical check-up before booking if you have any pre-existing conditions.
Is the optional Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek worth doing?
If you have the fitness and acclimatisation, the trek to Herrligkoffer Base Camp (named after the first successful Nanga Parbat mountaineer) and the views of Nanga Parbat from Fairy Meadows are among the most spectacular experiences available anywhere in the mountains. Your guide will advise you on your readiness.
Is Pakistan safe to visit?
Pakistan has a complex international reputation that does not fully reflect reality for travellers visiting the Hunza and Chitral regions specifically. These northern mountain areas have a well-established tourism infrastructure and are genuinely welcoming to international visitors. Our local guides are experienced, the routes are assessed continuously, and we would not run a tour we could not stand behind fully. Always check the latest UK Foreign Office travel advice before booking.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Solo female travellers do join our Pakistan tours. The northern mountain regions have a relatively open culture compared to some other parts of Pakistan. Modest dress (arms and legs covered, a scarf available) is important and appreciated. Being in a small group with an experienced guide provides strong support throughout.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first contact. Major towns along the route have clinics. For serious illness or injury in remote areas, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover is essential. The tour covers remote terrain where standard medical access may be hours away.
What is the accommodation actually like?
A genuine mix of 2 to 4-star hotels in main towns, comfortable guesthouses in valleys and mountain villages, and cabins in more remote areas. The Terichmir View Hotel in Chitral is a comfortable base with views of the Hindu Kush. In remote areas expect clean but simple facilities. The variety is part of what makes the itinerary feel so genuine.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
In city hotels (Islamabad, Gilgit, Chitral) yes. In mountain guesthouses and remote areas, connectivity is very limited or absent. Expect significant stretches of digital disconnection, which most travellers on this type of tour find thoroughly welcome.
Can I upgrade or add nights?
Yes. Extra nights in Islamabad can be arranged at the start or end of the tour. Private departures allow upgraded accommodation throughout. Contact us for details.
What kind of food will we eat?
Pakistani cuisine in the north is hearty and distinctive: daal, chapati, rice dishes, grilled meats, fresh mountain trout, apricots and local fruits from the Hunza Valley. Breakfast is typically substantial to fuel a day of travel or hiking. Meals are prepared locally throughout.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian eating is manageable in Pakistani cuisine, which features many lentil and vegetable dishes. Vegan is workable with advance notice. Gluten-free is challenging in remote areas. Let us know at booking.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water throughout. In remote areas, bring a Water-to-Go filter bottle and purification tablets. Tampons are noted as hard to find in Pakistan, so bring what you need.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The adventure travel demographic that joins this tour tends to bond quickly over shared experiences. The small group (maximum 16) means you quickly become a team.
Do I have to share a room?
Solo travellers are paired with another guest of the same gender by default. A single supplement is available if you prefer your own room.
What is the group size?
Groups have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 16. The small size ensures flexibility on rough mountain roads and at remote guesthouses.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The itinerary can run as a private departure. Contact us for details.
Do I need a visa for Pakistan?
Most nationalities require a visa for Pakistan. An e-visa system is available online. Check current requirements and fees on the official Pakistani immigration website before booking.
What should I pack?
Warm layers (mountain nights are cold even in summer), a windproof jacket, trekking trousers and shirts, quality hiking boots (broken in), a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, UV sunglasses, modest clothing including a scarf for women, a refillable water bottle and purification tablets, a small daypack, a headtorch, tampons if needed, and a plug adapter (Pakistan uses Type C/D/G at 220V).
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry from most countries. Typically recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus, and Diphtheria. Rabies vaccination is sometimes advisable for remote travel. Consult your GP or a travel clinic well before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and ends at Islamabad airport (ISB). You book whatever flights suit you. We are happy to arrange flights if you prefer.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Pakistan. Your guide will brief appropriate current amounts for drivers and guides at the start of the tour.
Can I attempt the optional Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek?
Yes. The trek to Herrligkoffer Base Camp (Nanga Parbat BC) is an optional extension from Fairy Meadows. It is strenuous but one of the most rewarding experiences on the route for those with sufficient fitness and acclimatisation.
Can I add time at Borith Lake or the Passu Glacier?
Borith Lake and a hike to the Passu Glacier are among the highlighted experiences in the itinerary. The Hussaini hanging bridge over the Hunza River is one of the more vertiginous highlights.
Can I add extra nights in Islamabad?
Yes. Extra nights in Islamabad at the start or end can be arranged. Islamabad has several good museums, the Faisal Mosque and the Lok Virsa folk museum worth visiting.
How far ahead should I book?
The summer season (June to September) is the only operational window for the northern mountain routes. Departures fill up 3 to 5 months ahead. With a maximum of 16 per group, book as early as you can.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit, full amount, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking (the optional Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek reaches over 4,000m), helicopter emergency evacuation, medical treatment, and repatriation in Pakistan. We partner with World Nomads. Send your policy number before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made well ahead of departure receive a refund of payments made. Closer-in cancellations attract fees on a sliding scale. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered with financial protection via Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us. We can check for cancellations, add you to a waitlist, or arrange a private departure on alternative dates.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

This tour stays in a mix of different accommodation, based partly on what is available in some of the remote areas we are visiting. In Islamabad and Rawalpindi we stay in a comfortable tourist class hotel (locally rated 3 or 4 star), while hotels and guesthouses are more simple and with less facilities further up the KKH. Bathrooms are en-suite in nearly all locations.
Accommodation is based on a twin-share basis, with single room supplements available if you would like to guarantee yourself a single room throughout the tour.
