Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Ladakh Explorer tour?
Ladakh Explorer is our 11-day small-group journey into one of the world's most remote and dramatic landscapes. Starting with a day in Delhi, you fly up to Leh (3,500m) in the Indian Himalayas and spend a week exploring a region where Tibetan Buddhism meets ancient trade routes. Highlights include Magnetic Hill, Hemis Monastery (the largest monastic foundation of the Drukpa Kagyu order), Shey Palace, the Nubra Valley with its sand dunes and Bactrian camels, the remote Turtuk village near the Pakistani border, and Pangong Tso Lake at 4,350m. Groups are capped at 12.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Ladakh is one of India's most unique regions and quite different from the rest of the country. It is remote, high-altitude, and culturally Tibetan. If you have not visited India before, this tour gives you a day in Delhi first and a guide throughout. Be aware the altitude is the main challenge.
What is the difference between Ladakh Explorer and other India tours?
Ladakh Explorer focuses entirely on the remote high-altitude Himalayan region of Ladakh, which is culturally and geographically distinct from the rest of India. Other India tours covering Rajasthan, Kerala or the Golden Triangle are at much lower altitude and cover a very different cultural landscape. Ladakh is specifically for travellers drawn to Buddhist monasteries, extreme mountain scenery, and remote adventure.
What is the best time of year to visit Ladakh?
The main touring season runs from June to September, when the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways are open and the weather is clear. September is excellent, with passes still open and thinner crowds. October onwards brings cold nights and snowfall risk at high passes. Private tours can be arranged in winter with adjusted itineraries.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
Getting to and around Ladakh is genuinely expensive. Your price includes return domestic flights between Delhi and Leh, accommodation in mid-range hotels and tented camps, all transport by private vehicle on mountain roads, local specialist guides, and all sightseeing as listed. Running a small group of maximum 12 with private vehicles in a remote high-altitude region carries a real premium over standard tourist routes.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: accommodation in mid-range hotels and guesthouses/camps, all transport and transfers, return domestic flights between Delhi and Leh, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers, sightseeing tours and activities as per the itinerary, services of local tour leaders and specialist local guides, and 10 breakfasts. Note: entrance fees are not included and you should budget separately.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, meals beyond the 10 breakfasts, drinks and personal expenses, tips, and entrance fees. Your guide will brief current suggested tip amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can hold a reservation, pay a deposit, or pay in full at booking. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is the Ladakh Explorer?
Moderate to challenging due to altitude. Leh sits at 3,500m, Pangong Tso at 4,350m, and the Changla Pass at 5,486m is crossed on day 9. Most travel is by vehicle, but the altitude affects everyone to some degree, causing headaches, breathlessness and fatigue, particularly in the first two days. The itinerary builds in acclimatisation time in Leh before heading to higher elevations.
How do you handle altitude sickness?
Two nights in Leh at the start allow your body to begin acclimatising before going higher. Rest, avoiding alcohol and heavy meals, and drinking plenty of water all help. If symptoms worsen rather than improve, descending is the only reliable treatment. Your guide monitors the group throughout. Anyone with serious heart or blood pressure conditions should consult a doctor before booking.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Age is not the deciding factor at altitude. Cardiovascular fitness and overall health matter more than years. We have had travellers in their 60s and 70s complete the tour comfortably. A doctor's check-up before departure is strongly advisable for anyone with pre-existing health conditions.
What if I have a medical condition?
Be upfront with us at booking. Serious heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or severe respiratory conditions require medical clearance before travel to altitude. We would rather help you assess the right tour than have you struggle in a remote location.
Is Ladakh safe to visit?
Yes. Ladakh is one of India's safest regions for tourists, with a welcoming local population and strong tourism infrastructure along the main routes. Road conditions on mountain passes require experienced local drivers, which is exactly what the tour uses.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Ladakh has a relaxed, open culture and solo female travellers are well received. You are with a small group and local guides throughout. Modest dress (arms and legs covered in monasteries) is appreciated.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Altitude sickness is the main concern and the guide is trained to recognise and respond to it. Leh has clinics and a hospital. For serious altitude illness, descent is the priority. Travel insurance with high-altitude medical evacuation cover is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Mid-range hotels in Delhi and Leh, comfortable guesthouses along the route, and tented camps in the Nubra Valley and at Pangong Tso. The tented camp at Pangong Tso, with the lake at 4,350m outside your tent door, is one of the tour's most memorable nights.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
In Delhi and Leh hotels, yes. In the Nubra Valley and at Pangong Tso, connectivity is very limited or non-existent. Indian SIM cards are available in Delhi but foreign SIMs may not work near the sensitive border areas. Plan for a few days of genuine digital disconnection.
Can I upgrade accommodation or add nights in Delhi?
Yes. Extra nights in Delhi at the start or end are available as paid options. Private bookings allow upgraded accommodation throughout. A Goa beach extension and a Varanasi visit are also available from Delhi.
What kind of food will we eat?
Ladakhi and Tibetan cuisine features thukpa (noodle soup), tsampa (roasted barley), momos (dumplings), and rice with dal. Hotel breakfasts in Delhi and Leh are buffet-style. In remote areas meals are simpler but wholesome.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian eating is easy in Ladakh, as Buddhist-influenced cuisine naturally favours vegetables, pulses and dairy. Vegan is workable with advance notice. Gluten-free is more challenging in remote areas. Let us know at booking.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water throughout. Bring a Water-to-Go filter bottle and purification tablets as a backup for remote sections where bottled water is harder to find.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. Solo travellers make up a good share of each departure. The small group (maximum 12) and intimate nature of the itinerary means bonds form quickly.
Do I have to share a room?
Solo travellers are paired with another guest of the same gender by default. A single supplement is available for those wanting their own room and tent throughout.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 12. The small size is deliberate, as responsible travel in remote Himalayan regions works best with fewer people. Travellers are typically adventurous and culturally curious, in their 30s to 60s.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The itinerary can run as a private departure on most dates, with winter adjustments as needed. Contact us for details.
Do I need a visa for India?
Most nationalities (UK, US, Canada, Australia, EU) can apply for an Indian e-visa online before departure. Check current requirements on the official Indian immigration website as they vary by nationality and are subject to change.
What should I pack?
Warm layers (nights at altitude are cold even in summer), a windproof jacket, trekking trousers, good walking shoes, a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, UV sunglasses, lip balm, a refillable water bottle with filter, a small daypack, modest clothing for monastery visits (arms and legs covered), and a Type D/M plug adapter for 230V sockets.
Are any vaccinations recommended?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry from most countries. Typically recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus and Diphtheria. Consult your GP or a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and ends at Delhi airport (DEL). You book whatever flights suit you. We can arrange flights if you prefer.
What about tipping?
Tipping is an accepted part of Indian service culture. Your guide will brief appropriate current amounts for drivers and guides at the start of the tour.
Can I add a Goa beach extension?
Yes. A Goa beach extension is available from Delhi at the end of the tour, a great way to decompress after the intensity of the high-altitude Himalayan scenery.
Can I add a visit to Varanasi?
Yes. A Varanasi extension from Delhi is available for those with extra time. Varanasi is one of India's oldest sacred cities and makes a fascinating contrast to Ladakh.
Can I add half-day tours in Delhi?
Yes. A New Delhi tour by car, an Old Delhi walking tour, the Salam Balak Trust walk, and a Spinmonkey cycling tour are all available as paid options in Delhi.
How far ahead should I book?
The summer season (June to September) is the only window when Ladakh's high passes are fully open. Group departures fill up 3 to 5 months ahead. The maximum of 12 per group fills quickly, so book as early as you can.
How does booking work?
Reserve online via the Dates and Prices tab. Pay a deposit, full amount, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. You receive instant confirmation and a pre-departure information pack including altitude preparation guidance.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it is compulsory. Your policy must specifically cover high-altitude travel (up to at least 5,500m given the Changla Pass at 5,486m), medical treatment, and emergency helicopter evacuation. We partner with World Nomads. Send us your policy number before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made well ahead of departure receive a refund of payments made. Closer-in cancellations attract fees on a sliding scale. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered with financial protection via Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
Contact us. We can check for cancellations, add you to a waitlist, or run the tour as a private departure on alternative dates. The short summer window means flexibility helps.

It was the best two weeks ever thanks to Atul and his wonderful team. We spent one week north of India, visited all the wonderful spots and we even celebrated Holi. It’s very complicated to select one highlight as we really saw so many wonderful things. After a week in the north we went to Kochi and visited the south of India which is more relaxing, green and seems like a different country. Atul was the best coordinator, he anticipated all our needs and was listening and adapting the program to our wish. Thank you so much Atul and Vijay for everything. You made our trip wonderful.

Just finished up the Incredible India tour, what an amazing experience! If you’re expecting every modern comfort and can’t be in the heat too long, this might not be for you. However, you would miss out on the experience to taste the most flavorful, colorful, and energetic culture that exists in this world. I would describe this tour as a Golden Triangle+ (it goes to a couple more towns/villages)
On most stops a local tour guide would join your group and give you a thorough explanation and interesting facts of the monuments, palaces, forts, etc. They were all fantastic. Not only they taught you the history but also made sure you visited markets, small villages, and mingled with the locals that were going about their daily lives. For this trip, we made sure we picked a date that included Holi festival. This was very special as we celebrated Holi in a very small village (Tordi). We got to play with the colors in a small village full of wonderful kids and people that were just as curious of us as we were of them. We had a blast with the colors. Our driver, Mr. Singh will always be a friend. In typical Sikh manner he was always there to save the day whenever anything went wrong. He did it always with a huge smile and would throw in a joke or two.
The accommodations were very well selected. As the tour description states, the heritage hotels were the absolute best. The hospitality was in the true Indian way. Both the Khandela Haveli and the Tordi Garh were great. I wish all hotels were in that style.
Booking this trip had its major challenges caused by India entry restrictions related to COVID-19. Encounters Travel did an excellent job recognizing these challenges and modifying their policies. I feel like they were more than fair in recognizing the uncertainties of traveling during a pandemic. Ant Horrobin took us by the hand throughout the entire process and kept us up to date with all the changes. Thanks to him we decided to go on with the trip and we could not be any happier!
Highly recommend.

This trip was fantastic, informative from start to finish. We were a small group of 13. We were lucky: everyone was congenial and punctual, meeting up at the appointed times, and Big Mo, our guide, with years of experience, paved our way from start to finish doling out sound advice, tips and precautions.
There are a couple of things you might want to know:
1) The food is delicious but its best to avoid raw fruits and vegetables, and never drink water from the tab. I was overly careful, even used straws to drink from a canned soda, etc. and I felt only an hours worth of travelers diarrhea. My husband ended up with a much bigger hit. He ignored advice from our friend who'd traveled to India and China many times. Rather than run the risk of missing some of the activities, just go without salads for one week... There are plenty of great cooked food options.
2) The sleeper train was an experience from Cairo to Aswan. If you are young, can afford to forego a good sleep, maybe its an adventure worth having. For the return trip, Luxor to Cairo, we asked to upgrade to Egypt Air and an extra night at the 5 star, Sheraton in Cairo. In other words we scratched a return trip by sleeper car train, and were very glad.
We can't say enough good things about Encounters Travel and our Egyptian experience.

Between my sister and her husband's planning and the organisation of Encounters we had the most amazing holiday in India. I wouldn't have changed a thing, and it was great to feel so confident in all the arrangements.

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

We use good quality hotels rated at the Indian 3-level on this tour in Delhi and Leh, and a guesthouse or camp style hotel in the Nubra Valley and at Pangong Tso Lake which will be comfortable but more basic. Local star ratings may vary slightly from international standards but we ensure we use some of the  best hotels available at the level stated.
The specific hotels listed on our website are our preferred hotels for our small-group tours. However, these may be changed from time to time based on current availability and other logistics. In this event alternative hotels of a similar standard will be used. If you would like to guarantee any particular hotels for your trip, please contact us to request a tailor-made tour.
