Frequently Asked Questions

What does this tour cover and how long is it?
The Temples, Dzongs and Taj tour is a 15-day small-group journey through Nepal, Bhutan, and India. You start in Kathmandu with guided visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley, then fly to Bhutan for a week exploring fortress monasteries (dzongs), mountain passes, a village homestay in the Phobjikha Valley, and the iconic Tiger's Nest monastery. The final section covers Delhi and Agra, including a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal.
What are the biggest highlights in Nepal?
Nepal highlights include Bhaktapur (a UNESCO-listed pedestrianised city full of stunning wooden temple architecture and lively squares), Pashupatinath Temple (one of Hinduism's most sacred pilgrimage sites, where cremation ceremonies take place on the banks of the Bagmati River), Boudhanath Stupa (one of the world's largest Buddhist stupas, encircled by prayer flags and monks in robes), Durbar Square, and Swayambhunath Stupa (the Monkey Temple, with panoramic views over the Kathmandu Valley).
What are the highlights in Bhutan?
Bhutan highlights include Ta Dzong (a 17th-century watchtower now housing the National Museum, with ancient thangkas and bronze statues), Paro Dzong (a majestic fortress-monastery with labyrinthine corridors), the 108 chortens at Dochu La Pass at 3,050 metres, the Punakha Dzong at the confluence of two rivers, a traditional village homestay in the Phobjikha Valley with a local family, the Gangtey Monastery, and the Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) perched 800 metres above the valley floor.
What are the highlights in India?
India highlights include a full day in Delhi covering India Gate, Humayun's Tomb (UNESCO), a metro ride to Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk market, a rickshaw ride, street food tasting with your guide, and the Jama Masjid mosque. In Agra you visit the Sheroes Hangout cafe (run by survivors of acid attacks), do a community Mughal Heritage Walk through the village of Kachhpura, watch the Taj Mahal at sunset from Mehtab Bagh, and return for a sunrise visit the next morning. You also tour the UNESCO-listed Agra Fort.
What is the village homestay in Bhutan like?
You spend two nights in a traditional village homestay in Gangtey in the Phobjikha Valley. You are welcomed by a local family, share home-cooked Bhutanese meals, and learn about daily village life, farming practices, and local customs. You might share butter tea with your hosts, help with simple tasks, and hear their stories. This is one of the most memorable parts of the tour for most travellers.
What is the Tiger's Nest hike like?
The hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) takes 2 to 3 hours each way through pine forests on a well-trodden mountain path. The monastery clings to a sheer cliff face 800 metres above the Paro Valley. Once you arrive, you explore the intricate temples and shrines perched on the cliffside. The views are extraordinary. The hike is a genuine highlight for almost everyone on the tour.

Bhutan
What is included in the tour price?
Included are all accommodation (3 to 4-star hotels and a village homestay), all transport in private air-conditioned vehicles, all transfers including 24-hour airport arrival and departure service, services of a local guide in Bhutan, a tour leader in Nepal, and specialist local guides in India, all meals as indicated in the itinerary (14 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 7 dinners), the Bhutan visa fee, and the Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee.

What is the Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee?
Bhutan charges all tourists a daily Sustainable Development Fee, which is included in the tour price. This fee funds Bhutan's free healthcare and education, and is part of the country's approach to high-value, low-impact tourism. It is one of the reasons Bhutan remains so well-preserved and uncrowded compared to neighbouring countries.
Do I need to budget for entrance fees in Bhutan and India?
Yes. Entrance fees to sites in Bhutan and India are not included. Budget approximately 75 per person for Bhutan and approximately 74 per person for India. Entrance fees in Nepal are included in the tour price. Your guide will collect entrance fees locally at each site.
How physically active is this tour?
This tour is moderately active. The Tiger's Nest hike (2 to 3 hours up and back on a mountain trail) is the most demanding activity and requires a reasonable level of fitness. The Phobjikha Valley nature walk and the Khamsum Yuelley Namgyel Chorten morning walk are gentler. City tours in Kathmandu, Delhi, and Agra involve several hours of walking on a mix of surfaces. Good walking shoes are essential throughout.
Is the Tiger's Nest hike compulsory?
The hike to Taktsang Monastery is a core part of the Bhutan experience and is strongly recommended. It is included in the itinerary. If you are unable to hike the full trail due to mobility issues, horses are available to hire part of the way up (not included in the tour price). Speak to the team before booking if you have any concerns.
What altitude will I reach on this tour?
The highest point on the itinerary is the Dochu La Pass in Bhutan at 3,050 metres. Some travellers experience mild altitude effects at this elevation, typically headaches or breathlessness. The Phobjikha Valley homestay is at around 2,900 metres. Most people acclimatise quickly. Bhutan's Paro airport sits at around 2,200 metres.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Travel insurance is mandatory for all Encounters Travel tours. Your policy must cover personal accident, medical expenses, emergency repatriation, and travel delay. Check that it covers the altitudes reached in Bhutan. Provide your insurance details before departure.
Is Bhutan safe to visit?
Bhutan is one of the safest countries in Asia for travellers. Crime rates are very low and tourists are warmly welcomed. Nepal and India are well-established tourist destinations with millions of visitors annually. As always, take normal precautions with valuables in busy markets and follow your guide's advice.
What accommodation is used on this tour?
You stay in 3 to 4-star hotels throughout Nepal, Bhutan, and India. In Bhutan you have two nights at a traditional village homestay in Gangtey in the Phobjikha Valley. Hotel rooms are en-suite with air conditioning or heating as appropriate. The homestay is simple but welcoming, with home-cooked meals included.
What is it like staying in the Phobjikha Valley homestay?
The Gangtey village homestay is a simple but comfortable traditional Bhutanese farmhouse. You stay with a local family and share their daily rhythms. Meals are home-cooked and hearty. Facilities are basic by hotel standards but the warmth and authenticity of the experience more than compensate. Bring a warm layer as the valley sits at around 2,900 metres and nights are cool.
Are hotel rooms en suite with private bathrooms?
Yes. All hotel rooms are en suite with private bathrooms throughout Nepal, Bhutan, and India. The village homestay has basic but functional bathroom facilities.
Which meals are included?
14 breakfasts, 7 lunches, and 7 dinners are included. The included meals are well-distributed throughout the itinerary. Notable included meals are the lunches and dinners in Bhutan (including the farewell dinner at a Paro farmhouse), the lunch at Sheroes Hangout Cafe in Agra, and the village homestay meals in Gangtey.
What is Bhutanese food like?
Bhutanese cuisine is hearty and distinctive. The staple is Ema Datshi, a fiery chilli and cheese stew. Red rice, buckwheat noodles, and momos (dumplings) are common. Meals at the homestay are freshly cooked and typically include local vegetables and meat dishes. Butter tea (made with yak butter and salt) is traditional; do try it at least once.
Can vegetarians and vegans be catered for?
Vegetarian food is easily available in Nepal, Bhutan, and India. Nepal and India in particular have excellent vegetarian traditions. Let the team know your dietary requirements when booking. For vegan diets, Bhutan can be more challenging (dairy is used widely in traditional cooking), so discuss this in advance so guides can brief the homestay family and restaurants.
What is the Sheroes Hangout Cafe visit?
The Sheroes Hangout Cafe in Agra is run by survivors of acid attacks. It was set up by the Chhanv Foundation to raise awareness of acid violence in India and to provide employment and community to women who have survived these attacks. Lunch here is included in the tour. It is a meaningful stop that Encounters Travel is proud to support.
Can I join this tour as a solo traveller?
Yes. Solo travellers are paired with another traveller of the same gender to share a room. If you prefer your own room, a single supplement applies. If no match is found before the balance payment date, the supplement is charged but refunded if a match is arranged.
Is this tour suitable for solo female travellers?
Yes. Nepal, Bhutan, and India are all popular with solo female travellers. The group tour format and having an experienced guide provide a supportive structure. India requires a little more awareness around personal space in crowded markets, but the tour environment is safe and well-managed.

What vaccinations are recommended for this tour?
Consult your GP or a travel clinic well before departure. Common recommendations for Nepal, Bhutan, and India include Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Typhoid, and Hepatitis B. Rabies vaccination is sometimes recommended for longer stays. Malaria prophylaxis may be advised for lower-altitude areas of Nepal and India. Confirm with a medical professional.
When does this tour operate?
This tour runs year-round with regular small-group departures. Some departures fall during Bhutanese festivals (Tsechus), which are excellent times to visit. The tour page lists upcoming dates. Note that on festival departures the itinerary may adjust slightly to make the most of the events.
Is an Everest mountain flight available?
Yes. On Day 3 in Kathmandu there is an optional Everest Mountain Flight available. On a clear morning, the small aircraft flies along the Himalayan range giving close views of Everest and other peaks. Weather-dependent and not always possible, but well worth booking if the timing works.
Can I book just the Bhutan or India section separately?
Yes. Encounters Travel offers Bhutan Encounters (8 days, standalone) and India Express (5 days, standalone) for those who want to focus on one country rather than the full 15-day itinerary. Nepal Express (6 days) is also available for those wanting only Nepal.
Are there optional activities in Bhutan?
Yes. In Bhutan on Day 10 you can end the Tiger's Nest day with a traditional hot stone bath, a deeply relaxing Bhutanese experience where the water is heated by fire-heated stones. A Vegetarian Thali cooking lesson and dinner with a Hindu family in Agra is also available as an optional evening activity.
What is the minimum group size to confirm a departure?
A minimum of 2 people is needed to confirm a departure. The maximum group size is 12. Private tours are available on any date.
What is the cancellation policy?
Standard Encounters Travel booking conditions apply. A deposit secures your place and the balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Cancellation charges increase as the departure date approaches. Full details are provided in your booking confirmation.
Should I book early for festival departure dates?
Yes. Festival dates (Tsechus) in Bhutan attract more visitors and flights in and out of Bhutan can sell out well in advance. Encounters Travel recommends booking as early as possible for festival departures and purchasing your internal flights promptly after booking the tour.
What are the Bhutanese dzongs?
Dzongs are fortress-monasteries unique to Bhutan. They serve as both administrative headquarters for each district and as centres of religious life. Their architecture is unmistakable: massive whitewashed walls, red and gold rooflines, and courtyards where monks go about their daily routines. On this tour you visit Paro Dzong, Punakha Dzong (at the confluence of two rivers and considered the most beautiful in Bhutan), and pass Wangdue Phodrang Dzong en route to Thimphu.
What are the Bhutanese Tsechu festivals?
Tsechus are annual religious festivals held at dzongs and monasteries across Bhutan. They feature vibrant masked dances (Cham) performed by monks and laypeople in elaborate costumes. The dances depict scenes from Buddhist scripture and are believed to bring blessings to those who witness them. Some departures on this tour are timed to coincide with festivals in Thimphu, Punakha, Paro, or the Phobjikha Valley (Black Crane Festival).
What is the Mughal Heritage Walk in Agra?
The Mughal Heritage Walk is a community-led walk through the ancient village of Kachhpura and the farmland alongside the Yamuna River, directly across from the Taj Mahal and Red Fort. Designed by a local NGO, the walk supports the community through employment and infrastructure investment. A villager guides you through the layout of traditional homes, local farming, and the cottage shoe-making industry. You also see lesser-known Mughal monuments along the river bank.
What currency is used in Bhutan and how do I pay?
Bhutan uses the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), which is pegged at par to the Indian Rupee. Indian Rupees are also widely accepted. Cards are accepted at larger hotels and shops. Carry local currency for smaller purchases, entry fees, and tips. ATMs are available in Paro and Thimphu but can be unreliable, so carry enough cash from the start of the Bhutan section.

It was the best two weeks ever thanks to Atul and his wonderful team. We spent one week north of India, visited all the wonderful spots and we even celebrated Holi. It’s very complicated to select one highlight as we really saw so many wonderful things. After a week in the north we went to Kochi and visited the south of India which is more relaxing, green and seems like a different country. Atul was the best coordinator, he anticipated all our needs and was listening and adapting the program to our wish. Thank you so much Atul and Vijay for everything. You made our trip wonderful.

Just finished up the Incredible India tour, what an amazing experience! If you’re expecting every modern comfort and can’t be in the heat too long, this might not be for you. However, you would miss out on the experience to taste the most flavorful, colorful, and energetic culture that exists in this world. I would describe this tour as a Golden Triangle+ (it goes to a couple more towns/villages)
On most stops a local tour guide would join your group and give you a thorough explanation and interesting facts of the monuments, palaces, forts, etc. They were all fantastic. Not only they taught you the history but also made sure you visited markets, small villages, and mingled with the locals that were going about their daily lives. For this trip, we made sure we picked a date that included Holi festival. This was very special as we celebrated Holi in a very small village (Tordi). We got to play with the colors in a small village full of wonderful kids and people that were just as curious of us as we were of them. We had a blast with the colors. Our driver, Mr. Singh will always be a friend. In typical Sikh manner he was always there to save the day whenever anything went wrong. He did it always with a huge smile and would throw in a joke or two.
The accommodations were very well selected. As the tour description states, the heritage hotels were the absolute best. The hospitality was in the true Indian way. Both the Khandela Haveli and the Tordi Garh were great. I wish all hotels were in that style.
Booking this trip had its major challenges caused by India entry restrictions related to COVID-19. Encounters Travel did an excellent job recognizing these challenges and modifying their policies. I feel like they were more than fair in recognizing the uncertainties of traveling during a pandemic. Ant Horrobin took us by the hand throughout the entire process and kept us up to date with all the changes. Thanks to him we decided to go on with the trip and we could not be any happier!
Highly recommend.

This trip was fantastic, informative from start to finish. We were a small group of 13. We were lucky: everyone was congenial and punctual, meeting up at the appointed times, and Big Mo, our guide, with years of experience, paved our way from start to finish doling out sound advice, tips and precautions.
There are a couple of things you might want to know:
1) The food is delicious but its best to avoid raw fruits and vegetables, and never drink water from the tab. I was overly careful, even used straws to drink from a canned soda, etc. and I felt only an hours worth of travelers diarrhea. My husband ended up with a much bigger hit. He ignored advice from our friend who'd traveled to India and China many times. Rather than run the risk of missing some of the activities, just go without salads for one week... There are plenty of great cooked food options.
2) The sleeper train was an experience from Cairo to Aswan. If you are young, can afford to forego a good sleep, maybe its an adventure worth having. For the return trip, Luxor to Cairo, we asked to upgrade to Egypt Air and an extra night at the 5 star, Sheraton in Cairo. In other words we scratched a return trip by sleeper car train, and were very glad.
We can't say enough good things about Encounters Travel and our Egyptian experience.

Between my sister and her husband's planning and the organisation of Encounters we had the most amazing holiday in India. I wouldn't have changed a thing, and it was great to feel so confident in all the arrangements.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

The accommodation on this tour is in comfortable mid-range tourist class hotels, mainly boutique style, and at the high end of the Nepalese/Indian 3-star level, and the Bhutanese 4-star level.

Like all aspects of tourism in Bhutan, hotels used for tourists are strictly regulated and inspected and all must reach a good standard to obtain their license to cater for tourists. So, you should expect good clean rooms, en-suite bathrooms, and some traditional Bhutanese styling in the building’s architecture and design.

Please check the Accommodation section on the tour page on our website for the hotels that we currently use most on this tour. These are given as a guide only and may be exchanged some dates for alternative properties of a similar standard. We will advise you of your first hotel in Kathmandu a few weeks before departure when we send out your final confirmation voucher and arrival instructions. We do not normally advise details of all the other hotels used throughout the tour. If you have specific requirements for individual hotels, please request a private/tailor-made tour.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
