Why book the Thailand Encounters tour?
Thailand Encounters is our 12-day private tour running Bangkok to Bangkok, combining the best of Thai history, culture, nature and adventure. You'll ride tuk tuks and long-tailed boats through Bangkok, visit the infamous Death Railway and Erawan Falls at Kanchanaburi, explore the UNESCO-listed ruins of Ayutthaya, and spend three days trekking through the Huay Nam Dang National Park, staying in Karen hill-tribe villages and finishing with bamboo rafting on the Mae Tang River. Two overnight sleeper trains connect the sections. Because it's a private tour, the itinerary, pace and accommodation can all be tailored to your group.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Thailand?
Yes. The route hits Bangkok, the main historical sites and the northern mountains, giving you a well-rounded introduction to the country. The trekking section adds an adventure element that goes beyond most first-time Thailand packages. If your priority is beaches, ask us about our other Thailand options.
What's the difference between this and your other Thailand tours?
Thailand Encounters (12 days, private) is the adventure and cultural immersion version, featuring the Death Railway, Ayutthaya, hill-tribe trekking and bamboo rafting. Our other Thailand tours (Classic Thailand, Wet and Wild in Thailand, Thai Spice, Siam Treasures) offer different blends of islands, beaches, temples and cooking. This tour is the right fit if you want trekking, history and a more active itinerary.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
Thailand has three seasons: post-monsoon (November to February) is the coolest and most comfortable for trekking and sightseeing. Pre-monsoon (March to May) gets progressively hotter. The rainy season (June to October) is warm and humid with regular rainfall. Trekking is still possible in the wetter months but trails can be muddier. For bamboo rafting, water levels are higher after the rains, which can make the current stronger.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Thailand tours. But this is a private tour, meaning it runs exclusively for your group on dates of your choosing. Your price covers 3 to 4-star hotels in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, village hut accommodation during the trek, a floating raft-house night at Kanchanaburi, two overnight sleeper train journeys, all transport, local guides for sightseeing and the trek, rucksack, water canteen and lifejacket for trekking, admission fees, and 9 breakfasts plus included meals on trek days.
What's actually included in the price?
All accommodation (hotels, village huts, raft-house stay), all transport and transfers, 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfers in Bangkok, services of a local guide throughout, trekking admission fees plus rucksack, water canteen and lifejacket, and meals as listed (9 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 dinners during trekking).
What's NOT included, and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, meals not listed in the itinerary, drinks, snacks, personal expenses, and tips for your guide, rafting guide and park guide. Your guide will suggest appropriate current tipping amounts.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can hold a reservation, pay a deposit, or pay in full. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Reserve now and pay later if you want to lock in dates while you sort flights.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate overall, with an active trekking section. The jungle trek involves roughly 1.5 hours of mostly downhill walking on day one and 5 to 6 hours of climbing and descending on day two, with plenty of breaks. You need to carry your own daypack during the trek. Bamboo rafting on the Mae Tang River can be lively depending on the season and water level. The rest of the tour, including Bangkok, Kanchanaburi and Ayutthaya, is easy sightseeing.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Since this is a private tour, the pace is entirely your own. The trek is described as suitable for anyone who is reasonably fit. If a 6-hour hill walk is a stretch, let us know and we can adjust the itinerary to find the right balance for your group.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The trekking section involves uneven trails, climbing and descending jungle paths. The bamboo rafting requires you to be a capable swimmer due to snags and rocks in the river. If either of these is a concern, please contact us before booking and we'll discuss what adjustments can be made on this private itinerary.
Is bamboo rafting suitable for non-swimmers?
No. Life jackets are provided and compulsory, but the guide's notes are clear that there are snags, rocks and debris along some sections of the Mae Tang River, and the current can be strong after rainfall. You should be a confident swimmer to participate.
Is Thailand safe to visit right now?
Thailand is one of the most visited countries in the world and the tourist areas on this itinerary, including Bangkok, Kanchanaburi and Chiang Mai, are well established and very safe for travellers. Our local team monitors conditions and follows standard travel advice.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Thailand is generally very welcoming to female travellers. Modest dress is appreciated at temples (shoulders and knees covered). The trek takes place with a local guide in established hill-tribe villages. Since this is a private tour, you can choose the composition of your group.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Bangkok and Chiang Mai have excellent private hospitals used to treating tourists. Your guide is your first point of contact for any medical issue on the road. Compulsory travel insurance covering medical treatment and repatriation is required before joining the tour.
What's the accommodation actually like?
3-star hotels in Bangkok (typically the Urbana Langsuan, a well-equipped serviced apartment hotel) and Chiang Mai (typically the Duangtawan Hotel, centrally located with pool and fitness centre), a floating raft-house on the River Kwai at Kanchanaburi (River Kwai Resotel), and two nights in traditional bamboo village huts during the trek. Huts provide a thin mattress, sheet and blanket. All hotel rooms have air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.
What's the sleeper train like?
Thailand's sleeper trains are of a good standard. Each carriage steward keeps things clean and serves meals and drinks to your seat. The steward converts facing seats into beds with pillow, sheets, blanket and a privacy curtain each evening. Separate restaurant car also available. The Bangkok to Chiang Mai overnight journey takes roughly 12 hours.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes in the Bangkok and Chiang Mai hotels. Village huts and the raft-house have no Wi-Fi. Thai SIM cards are cheap and easy to pick up at Bangkok airport if you want data coverage throughout.
Can I upgrade the accommodation?
Yes, since this is a private tour we can adjust accommodation levels. Contact us to discuss your preferences and we'll build in options to suit.
What kind of food will we eat?
Bangkok and Chiang Mai hotel breakfasts, plus dinners at the raft-house and lunches and dinners prepared by your porter in the hill-tribe villages during the trek (cooked bamboo-style over a fire). In Bangkok and Chiang Mai you'll have free evenings to explore the incredible local street food and restaurant scenes. Thai cuisine is one of the most celebrated in the world, expect pad thai, green curry, mango sticky rice and much more.
Can you cater for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets?
Thai cuisine has excellent vegetarian and vegan options across restaurants, markets and street food. During the trek, simple meals are prepared by the porter and can be vegetarian with advance notice. Gluten-free is manageable in the hotels but harder to guarantee in the villages. Tell us at booking and we'll brief the guide.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Stick to bottled water (cheap and widely available). Hotels use treated water. A refillable bottle with a filter (we partner with Water-to-Go) cuts plastic waste, especially useful during the trekking section.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Since Thailand Encounters is a private tour, it runs for your group alone. Solo travellers are welcome, and because the pace and itinerary are flexible, it works very well as a solo private experience. Contact us and we'll tailor it for you.
Do I have to share a room?
Single room supplements are available for solo travellers in the hotels. In the village huts during the trekking section, accommodation is communal bamboo huts, as is traditional in hill-tribe stays.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
As a private tour, this runs exclusively for your group. There's no minimum or maximum stated for private bookings. Contact us with your group size and we'll quote accordingly.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Older children and teenagers who are comfortable with active outdoor experiences would enjoy this tour. The trekking section requires reasonable fitness. Bamboo rafting requires swimming ability. For families with younger children, contact us to discuss adjustments to the itinerary.
Do I need a visa for Thailand?
Most nationalities including UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are granted a visa exemption on arrival for stays of up to 30 days. If you plan to stay longer, you'll need to arrange a visa in advance. Check current requirements with the Thai immigration authorities before travelling.
What should I pack?
Light tropical clothing, something warmer for cool mountain evenings in Chiang Mai, comfortable walking shoes or light trekking boots for the jungle section, sandals for Bangkok, swimwear, sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent (particularly for the trekking section), and a power adapter (Thailand uses Type A, B and C plugs at 220V). If your tour includes trekking, a light sleeping bag is recommended for the village huts in cooler months.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are legally required for entry. Hepatitis A and Tetanus are commonly recommended for Thailand. A Yellow Fever certificate is required if arriving from a country with Yellow Fever risk. Malaria prophylactics may be recommended for the trekking regions, particularly in the northern hills. Check with your GP or a travel clinic 6 to 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Your tour starts and ends at Bangkok International Airport (BKK). You're free to book your own flights. We can arrange flights on request.
What about tipping?
Tipping is not traditional in Thai culture but has become customary in the tourist industry. It is always optional and should reflect excellent service. Your guide will suggest appropriate current amounts for the guide, driver, rafting guide and park guide.
Can I add extra days in Bangkok?
Yes. Pre-tour and post-tour extra days in Bangkok can be added, with airport transfers included.
Can I customise the itinerary?
Yes, completely. Since this is a private sample itinerary, every element, including duration, activities and accommodation level, can be adjusted. Contact us and we'll build something specific to your interests.
Can I combine this with other countries?
Yes. Thailand sits alongside Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in our Southeast Asia portfolio and multi-country combinations are very popular. Contact us to discuss a longer itinerary.
How far ahead should I book?
As a private tour, you have more flexibility on timing than a fixed group departure. That said, booking earlier gives more choice of dates and time to sort flights. Contact us to discuss availability.
How does booking work?
Contact us to discuss your preferred dates, group size and any customisations. We'll provide a quote and reservation details. Deposit locks in your dates, with full balance due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, it's compulsory. Your policy must cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation and repatriation. If you're participating in bamboo rafting, make sure your policy covers this activity. We partner with World Nomads. Send us your policy number before departure.
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancel well ahead for a refund of payments made. Closer-in cancellations attract fees on a sliding scale. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Encounters Travel is UK-registered with financial protection via Trust My Travel.
What if the dates don't work?
Since this is a private tour, we have significant flexibility on dates. Contact us with your preferred travel window and we'll find what works.
