What is not included in the price?
Not included are international flights to Nepal, Nepal visa fees, travel insurance (compulsory), meals not indicated in the itinerary (only breakfasts are provided), entrance fees to sites not listed in the itinerary, camera fees at monument sites, drinks, snacks, tips, and other personal expenses.

How do I pay and when is the balance due?

Is tipping included?
Tipping is not included in the tour price. While always optional, tips are normal practice for guides, drivers, and assistants at the end of the tour. Your guide can brief you on customary amounts at the start of the trip.
Is this tour physically demanding?
This is a cultural touring holiday rather than a trek. However, Tibet sits at high altitude and Lhasa itself is at approximately 3,600m. You should be in reasonable health and allow time to acclimatise on arrival. The Kamba-La Pass crossing is at 4,974m and some passes exceed 5,000m.
Are there altitude concerns on this tour?
Yes. Lhasa sits at around 3,600m and the Friendship Highway crosses passes above 4,900m. Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Your guide will advise on acclimatisation. You should consult your doctor before travel and ensure your travel insurance covers emergency evacuation at altitude.
Is there any walking involved?
Yes, the tour involves walking at sightseeing sites and short hikes. On Day 11 in the Kathmandu Valley, you walk downhill from Nagarkot through pine forest and Chhetri villages to Changu Narayan Temple, a walk you can make as long or short as you like.
Is there a minimum or maximum group size?

Is travel insurance compulsory?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must cover personal accident and liability, medical expenses and repatriation, and travel delay and abandonment. What happens if Tibet closes to tourists?
The Chinese authorities occasionally close Tibet to tourists with little or no advance notice. If this happens during your travel period Encounters Travel will arrange a revised itinerary in Nepal or Bhutan and will issue a partial refund or adjust the charge depending on whether the alternative is cheaper or more expensive.

Tibet is generally open to tourists from April to February. The Chinese authorities typically close the borders to tourists throughout March and reopen in April. The central areas around Lhasa have good mild weather from April to November. The heaviest rains fall in July and August but mainly at night. The Friendship Highway overland route is generally passable year-round though winter weather can cause issues from December to February.
