Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Indus Domes and Deserts tour?
Indus Domes and Deserts is a 15-day journey through Pakistan's Sindh and Punjab provinces, from Karachi to Lahore, that takes you to sites found nowhere else in the world. You walk the world's largest necropolis at Makli Hills (1 million tombs across 10km), visit Mohenjo-Daro (UNESCO, one of the world's oldest cities, 5,000 years old), explore the world's largest fort at Ranikot (32km circumference), camp in the Cholistan Desert near Derawar Fort (40 bastions, built 1733), visit the world's largest mosque in Lahore (Badshahi Mosque), and witness the Wagah Border ceremony. Pakistani dress (Shalwaar Chemise) and a Letter of Invitation are included. November to March only, maximum 16 travellers.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Pakistan?
Yes, and it's one of the best ways to visit Pakistan. Having a professional guide and a pre-arranged Letter of Invitation removes the most complex logistics for first-timers. Pakistan is not yet on most travellers' radar, which means many of the extraordinary sites on this itinerary are virtually tourist-free. This is a destination for genuinely curious, adventurous travellers.
What's the difference between this and Indus Domes Deserts & Islamabad?

Our 11-day Indus Domes & Deserts tour is a focused cultural journey through Sindh and Punjab, travelling from Karachi up to Lahore. In contrast, our 14-day Indus Domes, Deserts & Islamabad tour includes this complete route and extends further north from Lahore to explore the capital city of Islamabad, the Margalla Hills, and the ancient UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Taxila before departure.

What's the best time of year to do this tour?
This tour operates November to March only. Pakistan's Sindh and Punjab in summer are extremely hot. The winter season offers comfortable temperatures for exploring outdoor sites like Mohenjo-Daro, Makli Hills, and the Cholistan Desert. The Wagah Border ceremony and Lahore's food street are at their most atmospheric in the cooler months.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
Pakistan requires a Letter of Invitation (included in this tour), and accessing some sites requires specific permits and logistics that don't apply in more standard tourist destinations. What's included is exceptional: 14 breakfasts, 13 lunches, and 13 dinners (almost fully inclusive meals for 15 days), Pakistani Shalwaar Chemise clothing, the Letter of Invitation, all listed entrance fees, 3-5 star hotels, and a professional guide throughout. Meals alone across 15 days represent significant value.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 14 nights accommodation (Mehran Hotel Karachi, Indus Hotel Hyderabad, Sehwan Divine Hotel, Sambara Inn Larkana, Step Inn Guesthouse Sukkur, Sindbad Hotel Multan, Luxus Grand Hotel Lahore), 14 breakfasts, 13 lunches, 13 dinners, Pakistani Shalwaar Chemise clothing, Letter of Invitation, all listed entrance fees, professional guide, and air-conditioned vehicle.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, the Pakistani visa (must be obtained in advance; the tour provides a Letter of Invitation to support your application), travel insurance, malaria prophylactics, personal spending, and tips are not included. Budget for the visa fee (check current costs with your nearest Pakistani embassy) and the malaria prevention regime.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. The main physical elements are walking extensive outdoor sites: Makli Hills necropolis (10km of tombs), Mohenjo-Daro's excavated city blocks, and Ranikot Fort. None require significant fitness beyond comfortable walking on uneven and dusty terrain. The Cholistan Desert camping night is relaxed rather than strenuous. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are recommended.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Pakistan's major sites are very accessible for older mobile travellers. Mohenjo-Daro is a large flat site. Makli Hills involves some uneven ground. The Masoon Shah Jo Minaro Tower has 84 steps if you want the view. A broad age range joins this tour.
What if I have mobility issues?
Mohenjo-Daro, Makli Hills, and Ranikot Fort involve walking on uneven or dusty surfaces. Some sites have steps and uneven ancient masonry. Flag mobility concerns at booking for specific advice.
Do I need malaria prophylactics?
Yes. Malaria is present in parts of Sindh and Punjab. Consult your GP or a travel health clinic at least 8 weeks before departure to discuss the appropriate prophylactic regime. Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk.
Is Pakistan safe to visit?
This is one of the most common questions about Pakistan, and the honest answer is: the sites on this tour's route through Sindh and Punjab have been accessible to tourists for years, and the country has a strong hospitality culture. Your guide and the tour operator monitor the situation actively; the tour only operates when conditions are safe. Check your government's current travel advisory and ask us directly about the current situation before booking.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Solo female travellers do join this tour. The group format and professional guide provide a structured and supportive environment. Wearing the included Shalwaar Chemise is both culturally appropriate and very practical: it reduces unwanted attention and is comfortable in the climate.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first call. Karachi, Lahore, and Multan have private hospitals. More remote sections of the Sindh route require evacuation to the nearest city. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is compulsory.
Do I need a Letter of Invitation?
Yes. A Letter of Invitation from a Pakistani host is required to support your visa application. This is included in the tour package: we provide it as part of your booking confirmation.
What's the accommodation actually like?
Accommodation ranges from 3-star to 5-star throughout. In Karachi the Mehran Hotel (3-star) is a reliable city base. Lahore concludes the tour at the Luxus Grand Hotel. In between, guesthouses and regional hotels vary in standard but are clean and well-run for the tourist circuit. The standout is Sambara Inn in Larkana, a characterful property with peacocks and ducks in the gardens.
What are the regional hotels like?
In smaller cities like Sehwan and Sukkur, accommodation is simple and functional rather than boutique. The journey is the point, not the hotels. The Sindbad Hotel in Multan and the Luxus Grand in Lahore are comfortable finales to the increasingly rewarding journey through Pakistan.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Hotels in Karachi and Lahore have reliable Wi-Fi. Smaller towns and guesthouses along the Sindh route have limited or no internet. A Pakistani SIM card (available at Karachi airport) provides mobile data in covered areas.
Can I upgrade?
The 17-day Indus Domes, Deserts and Islamabad tour adds two further days and Islamabad to the itinerary. For accommodation upgrades on specific nights, contact us at booking.
What kind of food will we eat?
Pakistani cuisine is extraordinary and almost entirely absent from the UK dining scene. Sindhi cuisine features rice-based biryanis, lentil dishes, and freshwater fish from the Indus. Punjab's food is richer: tarka dal, karahi chicken, nihari, and the famous Lahori food street where multiple restaurants compete for the best Lahori dishes. Almost all 42 meals across 15 days are included, which lets you eat deeply into regional Pakistani cooking.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Drink bottled water throughout Pakistan. Don't drink tap water or use ice from unknown sources. Your guide will manage safe water supply on the ground.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Excellent for solo travellers who want a genuinely off-the-beaten-path experience. Pakistan's hospitality culture means travellers are genuinely welcomed, and the small group format (maximum 16) makes for a tight community of like-minded explorers.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available. Some smaller guesthouses in regional towns have limited single room availability; confirm at booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 16 travellers. This tour attracts experienced, culturally curious travellers rather than first-time group tourists. Many guests have already done extensive travel in South Asia and are ready for Pakistan.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available for couples or groups. The Letter of Invitation can be arranged for private bookings as well.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The demanding logistics, long driving days, and complex destination context mean this tour is better suited to adults. Discuss any family travel queries with us directly.
Do I need a visa for Pakistan?
Yes. A Pakistani visa must be obtained before departure (it is no longer available on arrival). You'll need to apply to your nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate. We provide a Letter of Invitation with your booking to support your application.
What should I pack?
Pakistani Shalwaar Chemise (traditional dress) is provided and you should wear it throughout the tour: it's culturally appropriate and comfortable. Pack lightweight layers underneath for temperature variation. Comfortable walking shoes with grip for archaeological sites. Sun protection is essential for Mohenjo-Daro and Makli Hills. Insect repellent for malaria prevention.
Are any vaccinations required?
Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Polio, Tetanus, and Typhoid are all recommended for Pakistan. Malaria prophylactics are required. Consult your GP or travel health clinic at least 8 weeks before departure. Polio vaccination is a legal requirement for entry into some countries if departing Pakistan; check your onward destinations.
Do I need to book international flights through you?

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.
