DAY 1

Arrive in Moshi

Day 1 Meals TBC
Reach Moshi and settle in for the overnight stay. The arrival period is deliberately simple, allowing time to rest, organise your belongings and prepare for the next stage of the trip. The town’s location beneath Kilimanjaro provides the setting for the night and marks the transition from your earlier travel into the mountain experiences ahead.

Activities

  • Free Time / Leisure – Moshi Enjoy some time to relax at your Moshi hotel after arrival and settle in before the trek begins. You can rest, explore the town or prepare your gear for the days ahead.
DAY 2

Forest Cave

Day 2 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Drive to Umbwe Gate at around 1,800 metres and begin trekking through natural rainforest on a forestry track. The route climbs onto a narrow and steep forested ridge, with the surroundings becoming increasingly remote as the path gains altitude. After approximately five to six hours of walking, reach Forest Cave at about 2,940 metres and make camp near the rock overhangs for the first night on this section of the mountain.

Activities

  • Travel from Moshi to Umbwe Gate The drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate at 1,800 metres covers the distance to where the trek begins. Park formalities are sorted at the gate before you step into the forest.
  • Trek from Umbwe Gate to Forest Cave Camp A forestry track through natural rain forest leads up onto a narrow, steep forested ridge. Five to six hours brings you to the first campsite at Forest Cave, 2,940 metres, beneath a set of rock overhangs.
DAY 3

Barranco

Day 3 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Walk for roughly five to six hours towards Barranco Hut at around 3,940 metres. After leaving the forest, the route follows a more exposed ridge with the Breach Wall above and Great Barranco gorge below. The changing landscape marks the transition into higher mountain terrain before the day finishes at the campsite near Barranco Hut.

Activities

  • Hike Forest Cave Camp → Barranco Hut The climb continues until the forest ends, then a spectacular ridge is followed with the icy Breach Wall above and the Great Barranco gorge below. The campsite at 3,940 metres lies a short way from the Barranco Hut.
DAY 4

Barranco Wall Climb & Trek to Karanga

Day 4 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Scramble easily to the top of the Great Barranco and then a traverse over screes and ridges to the Karanga Valley campsite beneath the icefalls of the Southern Glaciers. Karanga River camp site (3h, 4000m. Trail conditions, visibility and walking pace can vary with the terrain and weather. Take the walking stage steadily and allow the terrain, altitude and local conditions to shape the rhythm of the day.

Activities

  • Climb the Barranco Wall The steep rock band of the Barranco Wall rises directly above camp and must be tackled before the day is done. The way up is a scramble to the top of the Great Barranco.
  • Trek from Barranco Hut to Karanga Camp A steep ridge and a succession of scree slopes are crossed to reach the Karanga Valley campsite. The icefalls of the Southern Glaciers hang above you for much of the way.
DAY 5

Barafu

Day 5 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Trek for approximately three hours towards Barafu Hut at around 4,600 metres. The ridge leads steadily upwards into a more exposed landscape where vegetation becomes sparse and the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro dominate the surroundings. Reaching Barafu completes the day’s ascent and places you at the overnight campsite ahead of the next high-altitude stage.

Activities

  • Trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp Leaving the Karanga Valley, the trail passes the junction with the Mweka Trail on the way up to Barafu Camp at 4,600 metres. The South Circuit is now complete, with Mawenzi and Kibo both in view from the campsite.
DAY 6

Summit and Mweka

Day 6 Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
Start just after midnight for the ascent of the screes leading to Stella Point (6h, 5725m.). From here a further 40mins. leads to Uhuru Peak. Descend to the Barafu Hut for a rest and brunch before continuing down to camp at Mweka Hut at 3100m, (11-14h total walking time). Those with energy on the summit may wish to descend to the Reutsh Crater and visit the dramatic ice pinnacles of the Eastern Icefields.

Activities

  • Summit Trek from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak A pre-dawn departure from Barafu begins the scree climb to the crater rim, then the route follows it to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, Africa's highest point. Around six hours to the top, and extreme cold is the norm.
  • Descend from Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp From the summit you drop down to Mweka Camp at 3,100 metres, roughly five hours below. Gaiters and trekking poles are worth having for the loose gravel on the way down.
  • Optional Visit to the Eastern Icefields Ice Pinnacles Those who reach the summit with energy to spare may descend into the crater to see the dramatic ice pinnacles of the Eastern Icefields. It is entirely optional and depends on how you feel on the morning.
DAY 7

Moshi

Day 7 Breakfast
Descend from Mweka Camp through the lower forest towards Mweka Gate, a walking stage of around three to four hours. The trail continues steadily downhill through increasingly lush vegetation as the mountain environment gives way to the lower slopes. After reaching the park gate and completing the trek, meet the vehicle for the road journey back to Moshi and leave Kilimanjaro behind.

Activities

  • Trek from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate The descent from Mweka Camp drops through the last of the forest to Mweka Park Gate. The lower slopes can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and poles are useful, and the temperature rises noticeably with each hour.
  • Travel from Mweka Gate to Moshi A waiting vehicle at Mweka takes you the short distance back to your hotel in Moshi. A hot shower and a proper bed signal the end of your time on the mountain.
DAY 8

Moshi Departure & Tour End

Day 8 Breakfast
After breakfast in Moshi, the organised tour comes to an end. There are no further sightseeing visits or scheduled activities, leaving the rest of your time open for your own onward plans. Use the morning to finish packing, say farewell to the people you have travelled with and prepare for the next part of your journey from the Kilimanjaro region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Kilimanjaro Umbwe Trek?
Kilimanjaro Umbwe Trek is a private 8-day summit attempt via the Umbwe Route, which is the most direct and challenging route on Africa's highest mountain. Starting from Umbwe Gate (1,800m), the route climbs steeply through rainforest and heathland to the southern circuit, reaching Barranco Hut (3,940m), Karanga River campsite (4,000m), Barafu Hut (4,600m) before the midnight summit push to Stella Point (5,725m) and Uhuru Peak (5,895m). You're based at Springlands Hotel in Moshi before and after the trek. Flying Doctor insurance cover for the mountain is included.
Is this trek suitable for first-time climbers?
The Umbwe Route is not recommended for first-time high-altitude mountaineers. It is the steepest and least acclimatisation-friendly route on Kilimanjaro. First-time Kilimanjaro climbers are typically better served by the longer Machame or Lemosho routes, which allow more gradual altitude gain. If you are an experienced high-altitude trekker looking for a direct challenge, Umbwe delivers it. Contact us to discuss whether this route is right for your experience level.
What makes the Umbwe Route different from other Kilimanjaro routes?
The Umbwe Route is the most direct route on the mountain, climbing steeply and giving very little time for acclimatisation compared to the Machame, Lemosho or Rongai routes. This makes it harder and gives lower summit success rates on shorter itineraries. It is chosen by experienced trekkers who want the challenge of the route itself. The views from the southern circuit approaching Uhuru Peak are among the finest on the mountain.
What's the best time of year to climb Kilimanjaro?
January to March and June to October are the drier windows with the best summit conditions. April and May bring the long rains; November brings the short rains. The mountain can be attempted year-round, but the drier months give the best summit success rates.
Why does this trek cost what it does?
Kilimanjaro is a national park with significant government fees (park fees, rescue fees, camping fees) that apply regardless of which operator you use. On top of those fees, the price covers 7 nights accommodation and meals on the mountain (3 meals per day), Springlands Hotel in Moshi, all transfers, an experienced licensed guide and porters, Flying Doctor insurance for the mountain section, and all the logistics of a high-altitude expedition. Kilimanjaro is not a cheap climb to do properly.
What's actually included in the price?
Included are all accommodation (Springlands Hotel in Moshi and mountain camps), 3 meals per day on the mountain and breakfasts at Springlands, all transport and transfers, a licensed mountain guide and porters, national park fees, rescue fees, and Flying Doctor insurance cover for the duration of the mountain section.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included are your international flights, Tanzanian visa fees, personal travel insurance (compulsory in addition to the included Flying Doctor cover), drinks, personal spending, and tips for your guide and porters. Mountain guiding tips are a significant expectation at the end of a Kilimanjaro climb; your guide will advise on current norms.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Secure your place with a deposit or use the reserve-now-pay-later option. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this trek?
Kilimanjaro via the Umbwe Route is a strenuous to difficult undertaking. The first two days involve very steep climbing through forest and moorland, gaining significant elevation quickly. The summit night starts at midnight and involves a brutal ascent of 1,300m in darkness to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m). You should arrive with strong cardiovascular fitness built over months, not weeks.
How do you handle altitude sickness on Kilimanjaro?
The Umbwe Route's steepness means altitude sickness is a real risk. Your licensed guide is trained to monitor for AMS symptoms and will make descent decisions if necessary. Summit success is never guaranteed on any route. The Flying Doctor insurance included in the tour covers emergency evacuation from the mountain. Your personal travel insurance must also cover high-altitude trekking evacuation.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Age is less of a barrier on Kilimanjaro than overall cardiovascular fitness and the ability to acclimatise. Climbers in their 50s and 60s reach the summit regularly. The key is arriving well-prepared and not rushing the ascent. As a private trek, the pace is yours.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Kilimanjaro is a serious high-altitude undertaking and is not appropriate for anyone with significant mobility limitations or uncontrolled cardiovascular, respiratory or altitude-related conditions. Get a full medical check-up before booking.
Is Tanzania safe to visit right now?
Tanzania is a stable and popular tourism destination. Moshi and Kilimanjaro National Park are safe, well-established parts of the country's tourism infrastructure. We recommend checking current government travel advice before departure.
Is it safe for women climbing solo?
Yes. Kilimanjaro is climbed by solo women regularly, and the guided format means you are with your team throughout. The Umbwe Route is less crowded than the Machame Route, so you will have more solitude.
What happens in a medical emergency on the mountain?
Your guide carries first aid equipment and is trained in altitude illness management. Flying Doctor insurance is included in the trek price and covers emergency air evacuation from the mountain. Your personal travel insurance must also cover helicopter evacuation from altitude above 5,895m.
What's the accommodation actually like?
In Moshi you stay at Springlands Hotel, a well-established, comfortable hotel that serves as the base for many Kilimanjaro climbs. On the mountain, the accommodation is in tents at designated campsites along the route, with sleeping bags and equipment provided.
What are the camping conditions like on the mountain?
Mountain camping is basic and purposeful: tents, sleeping bags, and the bare essentials. There are toilet facilities at the main camps. Conditions become increasingly exposed and cold above 4,000m. Your sleeping bag and gear are suitable for the temperatures encountered on the route. The summit night temperature can drop well below zero.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Springlands Hotel has Wi-Fi. On the mountain there is no internet access. You will be offline for the 7 days of the climb.
Can I upgrade my Moshi hotel accommodation?
Springlands Hotel is the standard base hotel. Contact us if you'd like to arrange alternative or upgraded accommodation in Moshi.
What kind of food will we eat?
Three meals per day are provided on the mountain by your cook: hot breakfasts, packed lunches, and a cooked dinner each evening. The focus is on calories and warmth: porridge, eggs, rice, pasta, stew, and plenty of hot drinks. At Springlands Hotel you'll have restaurant meals before and after the climb.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?

Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Use only filtered or boiled water on the mountain. Your cook provides boiled water and hot drinks. At Springlands Hotel, stick to bottled water. We recommend a Water-to-Go filter bottle for convenience. Use code ENCOUNTERS25 for 25% off.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
This is a private trek so solo climbers get their own dedicated guide, chef and porters. Many Kilimanjaro climbers go solo. The team around you is substantial regardless of your party size.
Do I have to share a tent?
Solo climbers get their own tent on the mountain. The standard tour is private, so sharing is not an issue.
Can I book this as a small group climb?
Yes. Groups of friends, colleagues or family can all book together as a private expedition. Contact us to discuss logistics and pricing for your group size.
Do I need a visa for Tanzania?
Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or apply in advance through the e-Visa portal. Check current requirements and fees for your nationality on the official Tanzania immigration website before departure.
What should I pack?
Technical layers are essential: base layers, insulating mid-layers, waterproof outer shell, insulated trousers for summit night, heavy gloves and balaclava (the summit is extremely cold), sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen (high-altitude UV is intense), trekking poles, and a good headtorch with spare batteries. A daypack for the trail and a duffel bag for porters to carry. Detailed packing advice is provided in your pre-departure information.
Are any vaccinations required?
For Tanzania, recommended vaccinations include Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Malaria prophylactics are recommended for Tanzania (though Kilimanjaro itself is above the malaria zone, the time spent in Moshi is at risk altitude). Yellow Fever certificate is required if arriving from an infected area. Consult your GP or travel clinic.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. International flights are not included. Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Airport and hotel transfers in Moshi are included.
What about tipping?
Tipping your guide, assistant guide and porters is an important part of Kilimanjaro culture and a significant contribution to your team's income. Your guide will advise on current standard amounts at the end of the climb. Bring cash in US dollars.
Can I extend my trip with a Tanzania safari or Zanzibar?
Tanzania is one of the world's premier safari destinations, and Zanzibar's beaches are within easy reach of Kilimanjaro. Contact us about adding safari days in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, or a Zanzibar beach extension after your climb.
Can I add extra nights in Moshi before or after the trek?
Yes. Extra nights at Springlands Hotel are available as a paid add-on, useful for acclimatisation, recovery or early/late flight logistics.
How far ahead should I book?
Book at least 2-3 months ahead to ensure your preferred summit window. Peak trekking months (January-March and June-October) fill more quickly.
How does booking work?
This tour is On Request pricing: contact us with your preferred dates and group size for a confirmed quotation. Pay a deposit to secure your dates. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance is compulsory and must cover medical expenses and emergency helicopter evacuation from at least 5,895m altitude. The Flying Doctor insurance included in the trek covers mountain evacuation, but this is in addition to, not a substitute for, your personal travel insurance. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers over 150 adventure activities.
What's your cancellation policy?
Cancellation charges apply on a sliding scale. Note that national park fees paid to the Tanzanian authorities are typically non-refundable. Full details are in the booking conditions. All bookings are financially protected through Trust My Travel.
What if I don't make the summit?
Summit success on Kilimanjaro is never guaranteed. Weather conditions, altitude sickness or personal condition can all result in a descent before the top. Your guide's job is to get you as high as it is safely possible to go. If you want to maximise your chances of success, consider a longer route than Umbwe, such as the Machame or Lemosho routes. Contact us to discuss options.

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

Encounters Travel, you did it again! We had an amazing and very memorable trip to Bhutan. It was very well organized. The tour company did a wonderful job. Our journey through Bhutan was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, the country's serene landscapes and deep-rooted culture wrapped us in a sense of peace and wonder. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) was a breathtaking hike and an even more spiritual reward at the top. The view was surreal, and the monastery seemed to float on the cliffside. The trip leaves you with a calmer heart, a clearer mind, and memories that feel timeless!

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. International Flights

We want to give you as much flexibility as possible when it comes to booking your holiday with us. So, to take account of people with varying travel plans, we don’t include your international flights in the main tour price. We are however very happy to suggest flights to go with the tour. Please contact us with your preferred dates and departure airport and we’ll give you a selection of airlines, times and fares to choose from.

On our Tanzania Small Group Tours, airport transfers are not included in the price of the tour, but are available on a request basis.

We do also sometimes advertise flight inclusive packages from selected airports. Where these are shown on our website, prices are correct at the time of quoting, but are subject to continued availability of the fare used. Prices will be reconfirmed at the time of booking, and we will also provide the flight times and airline details before tickets are issued.
Flight inclusive prices are based on the cheapest Economy ticket class available which is generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless the flight is cancelled for reasons such as Covid-19, in which case the airlines are more flexible. More flexible ticket options, as well as Premium Economy and Business Class tickets are available on request for an additional supplement. Any changes made to flight inclusive bookings will be subject to the airline rules on your ticket.

Flight CO2 Emissions:

Traveling by air is an amazing way to explore the world, but flights also contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that impact the environment. By considering the airline's CO2 emissions when you choose your flight, you can help minimize your travel footprint.

When selecting your international flights and airline, we do therefore recommend that you try and also take into account the flight CO2 emissions. Some airlines and flight search websites (eg. Google Flights, Skyscanner) do publish this information, so you can compare between your flight options and make an informed decision. Thankfully, many airlines are working towards sustainability efforts, and choosing a greener option allows you to contribute to positive change while still enjoying your incredible adventure.
