Is this tour suitable for first-time trekkers?
Yes, with a few caveats. The trekking in Nam Ha National Park is a full day on jungle trails, and the 100 waterfalls trail involves walking through streams and climbing small waterfalls. None of the individual days are technically difficult, but you need a reasonable base level of fitness and a willingness to get wet on the waterfalls day. The community homestay is basic, and the boat cruises are gentle. First-time trekkers who keep active at home will manage this well.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
The driest and coolest months are November through February, which is the most popular time to trek in northern Laos. Rivers are also higher in November, making boat cruises more impressive. December through February is peak tourist season, particularly in Luang Prabang, so book ahead. The May to October monsoon season brings heavier rains and some roads can flood, though trekking is still possible with appropriate gear.
What makes Luang Prabang worth three nights?
Luang Prabang is one of Southeast Asia's most intact historic cities. You have time to watch the early morning Tak Bat (alms-giving) procession, visit the magnificent Wat Xiengthong with its roofs sweeping close to the ground, climb Mount Phousi for panoramic views over the Mekong River, explore the Pak Ou caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues, and take a half-day trek to Kuang Si Waterfall, where turquoise pools are open for swimming. Three days barely scratches the surface.

Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can reserve your place with a deposit or hold a reservation and pay later. The full balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. The most demanding day is the full day trekking in Nam Ha National Park on Day 3, which includes jungle paths and a climb to Phoumpok Stupa viewpoint. The 100 waterfalls trail on Day 8 involves walking through shallow streams and climbing stepped waterfalls for several hours. The community homestay trek (Day 6) is about 2 hours each way. If you walk regularly and can manage 4-5 hours on your feet on a trail, you will be fine.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The trekking sections are on natural jungle and river terrain with no guaranteed flat paths. If you have significant knee, hip or ankle issues, the stream-walking on the waterfalls trail and the village treks will be difficult. Contact us before booking and we can discuss which sections could be adapted or skipped.
Do I need to be able to swim for the waterfalls trail?
The 100 waterfalls trail involves wading through shallow water up to knee or waist height in places, but you are not swimming. That said, some of the pools near the waterfalls are inviting for a dip. There is no mandatory swimming. A dry bag is recommended to protect your camera.
Is Laos safe to visit?
Laos is one of Southeast Asia's quietest and most welcoming countries. The areas on this tour, from Luang Namtha through the river towns to Luang Prabang, are well-established tourist routes with no significant security concerns. Standard travel precautions apply. Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Laos is considered one of the safer Southeast Asian destinations for women travelling alone. The private-tour format means you always have a local guide with you. Luang Prabang in particular is well-trodden and low-risk.
What happens if I get sick on tour?

What is the accommodation actually like?
A mix of 2 to 3-star hotels and guesthouses, plus one night in a community bamboo guesthouse in Ban Houaisene. In Chiang Rai you stay at The Wiang Inn, a central hotel near the night market with a pool. In Luang Namtha, The Boat Landing is an eco-lodge on the Namtha River serving local Lao food on a river veranda. In Nong Khiaw, Nongkiau Riverside has elegant bungalows with balconies facing the river and karst mountains. In Luang Prabang, Villa Chitdara is centrally located near the night market. Note that Nong Khiaw has limited electricity supply, so no air-conditioning, though the evenings are usually cool.
What is the community homestay like?
On Night 6 you stay in a community bamboo guesthouse in the T'ai Deng village of Ban Houaisene. This is simple accommodation: basic but clean beds, communal facilities. The highlight is the Baci ceremony and traditional music the village puts on in the evening. It is a genuine cultural exchange, not a staged performance.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
The hotels in Chiang Rai, Luang Namtha and Luang Prabang have Wi-Fi. In remote river towns like Muang Ngoi and Nong Khiaw, and in the village homestay, connectivity is limited or absent. Download maps and reading material before you leave each main town.

What kind of food will we eat?
Northern Laos cuisine is fresh, spicy and distinct. On the Nam Ha trek your guide prepares jungle picnic lunches using bamboo cooking techniques with Black Tai or Akha-style food. In Luang Namtha, The Boat Landing serves authentic Luang Namtha cuisine overlooking the river. In Luang Prabang you find a mix of Lao restaurants and French-influenced cuisine (a legacy of the colonial era). Sticky rice is a staple throughout.

Is it safe to drink the water?
Do not drink tap water anywhere in Laos. Stick to bottled or filtered water. Drinking water is included in the tour price. A Water-to-Go filter bottle is also a good option for reducing plastic waste (use code ENCOUNTERS25 for a discount).

What is the group size?

Is this tour suitable for kids?
The trekking days are full and long, making this better suited to older teenagers and adults. The community homestay and village visits are culturally interesting for curious teenagers, but the physical demands of the jungle and waterfalls trekking are not appropriate for young children.
Do I need a visa for Laos?
Most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at the Huay Xai border crossing from Thailand. The visa stamping fee is payable locally and not included in the tour price. Check current requirements on the official Lao immigration website before departure.
What should I pack?
Lightweight trekking clothes that dry quickly. Long sleeves and trousers for the evening mosquito hour and for village visits. Sturdy closed-toe shoes or trekking sandals for the waterfalls trail (water shoes can be worn through the streams). A dry bag for the waterfalls day. Light rain jacket for the mountains. Insect repellent. Power adaptors for Laos (Type A, B and C sockets, 220V).
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Laos include Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Malaria prophylactics may be recommended for trekking in northern jungle areas. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into Chiang Rai Airport in Thailand and out of Luang Prabang Airport in Laos. Airport transfers at both ends are included in the tour price.
What about tipping?
Tipping is not included in the price. It is customary to tip your local guide and driver at the end of the tour. Your guide can advise on typical amounts at the start.
Can I add extra nights in Luang Prabang?
Yes. Extra nights in Luang Prabang after the tour ends are available as a post-tour add-on. The city rewards additional time.
Can I do a longer trek in the Nam Ha National Park?
Yes. The tour notes indicate that 3 and 5-day treks in the Nam Ha National Park area can be organised. If you want a deeper wilderness experience before continuing the main route, contact us to discuss extending the Luang Namtha section.

How far ahead should I book?
As a private tour, it can run on relatively short notice. However, peak season (December to February) in Luang Prabang is busy and the better guesthouses fill up, so booking 2-3 months ahead for that period is advisable.
