Why book the Temples & Tigers tour?
Temples and Tigers is a 10-day small-group journey through India's Golden Triangle and Ranthambore, combining iconic monuments with wildlife and authentic cultural access. You visit India Gate and Humayun's Tomb in Delhi, the Mughal Heritage Walk through Kachhpura village with sunset views of the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh, sunrise at the Taj Mahal itself, a stay at Suroth Mahal heritage palace with four-poster beds and painted murals, the world's largest and deepest step well at Abhaneri, Amber Fort in Jaipur, and Ranthambore National Park for tiger safaris. Maximum 12 travellers, 3-4 star and heritage properties throughout.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to India?
Yes. The Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) is the classic India introduction and this tour covers it well while adding Ranthambore for wildlife. The small group maximum of 12 means you have close guide access throughout, which is particularly valuable for first-time visitors navigating India's cities. The 3-4 star and heritage accommodation also takes the edge off the sensory intensity of first-time India.
What's the difference between this and your other India tours?
Temples and Tigers (10 days, Delhi loop) focuses on the Golden Triangle plus Ranthambore wildlife. Taj to Varanasi (a different tour) includes the Ganges and a different region of India. If the combination of Mughal heritage and wildlife is the priority, Temples and Tigers is the right choice. Check current availability for related India tours if you want to compare.
What's the best time of year to do this tour?
The tour does not operate in July, August, or September due to the monsoon. The best windows are October to March: cool and clear, ideal for the Taj Mahal and for tiger sightings in Ranthambore. April to June is hot (Delhi can reach 45°C) but the parks are still operational. The hot air balloon in Jaipur operates September 1 to May 10.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, India can look affordable on a budget basis. What's included here is 9 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 3 dinners, 3-4 star and heritage properties (including Suroth Mahal palace and Ranthambore Heritage Haveli), air-conditioned minivan throughout plus a train leg, all listed entrance fees, a Mughal Heritage Walk guide, a shared canter safari in Ranthambore for tiger spotting, a Sheroes Hangout Cafe lunch in Agra (supporting acid attack survivors, already included), and a block printing demonstration. The heritage accommodation and the quality of access make the difference.
What's actually included in the price?
Included: 9 nights accommodation (Hotel Broadway/Alivaa Collection Delhi, Hotel Sun Ring Agra, Suroth Mahal heritage palace, Mandawa Haveli Hotel Jaipur, Ranthambore Heritage Haveli), 9 breakfasts, 2 lunches (including Sheroes Hangout Cafe Agra), 3 dinners, air-conditioned minivan transport, a train leg, all listed entrance fees, Mughal Heritage Walk, shared canter safari in Ranthambore, block printing demonstration, and gemstone demonstration in Jaipur.
What's NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, travel insurance, most lunches and some dinners on your own, personal spending, and tips for guides and drivers are excluded. Optional activities (Goa extension, Varanasi extension, Spinmonkey cycling, hot air balloon Jaipur, Bollywood movie) are all at your own cost. Entrance fees beyond those listed are extra. Your guide will brief current tipping recommendations at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Moderate. Walking at the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, Abhaneri step well (a descent of 13 stories and 3,500 steps into the earth), and Ranthambore can involve several hours on your feet on uneven ground. The safari canter is seated. Delhi's Old Town involves a rickshaw ride and walking through narrow Chandni Chowk streets. Comfortable walking shoes are essential; athletic fitness is not required.
What if I'm older than the rest of the group?
Temples and Tigers is accessible for older, mobile travellers. The Abhaneri step well is worth noting: it's 3,500 steps and 13 stories deep, and while the descent is gradual, those with knee issues should think about it before committing. The rest of the itinerary is moderate and very manageable.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The heritage properties and some ancient sites involve uneven cobblestones and steps. Abhaneri step well is very step-heavy. If you have significant mobility limitations, flag them at booking so we can advise on which elements work for you and which may need adjusting.
How hot does it get?
Delhi and Agra in May and June can reach 45°C. The tour does not operate July-September. October through February is the comfortable sweet spot: 20-30°C in the day and cooler at night. Pack light, breathable clothing for the warm months and a light layer for cooler mornings at the Taj Mahal (sunrise visits can be chilly).
Is India safe to visit?
India is a complex, vibrant, and generally safe destination for international tourists, particularly in the Golden Triangle region which has excellent tourist infrastructure. Standard urban sense about pickpocketing and awareness in crowded areas is sensible. Your guide will brief you on local safety context at each stop.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
India requires a degree more awareness for solo female travellers than some other destinations. The small group format (maximum 12) and the heritage hotel accommodation provide a supportive environment. Modest dress helps in most contexts. Your guide will give specific advice for each city you visit.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide is your first call. Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur all have good private hospitals. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is compulsory. The main health risk in India for most travellers is gastrointestinal; follow standard food and water precautions from day one.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
At the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, and in Agra's markets, yes, there will be persistent sellers and unofficial guides. Having an official guide with you provides significant buffer. A polite but firm approach and your guide's local authority mean this is easily managed.
What's the accommodation actually like?
Hotels are 3-4 star and heritage properties throughout. Hotel Sun Ring in Agra has Taj Mahal rooftop views. The standout is Suroth Mahal, a genuine heritage palace with painted murals and four-poster beds. Mandawa Haveli in Jaipur is a traditional haveli-style property. Ranthambore Heritage Haveli is 500m from the park gate. The mix of heritage and comfort is a distinctive feature of this tour.
What's Suroth Mahal like?
Suroth Mahal is a heritage palace in a small village between Agra and Jaipur. Rooms have painted murals, four-poster beds, and the atmosphere of a genuinely old Indian palace. It's not a chain hotel: it's the kind of place that takes a few moments to orient yourself to its scale and character. Staying here is one of the more distinctive moments of the tour.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
All properties on this tour have Wi-Fi. Signal quality varies; the heritage properties in rural locations can be slower. An Indian SIM card with data is worth getting at Delhi airport for reliable connectivity on the move.
Can I upgrade?
Private departures allow for upgraded accommodation choices. If you'd like 5-star properties throughout or specific upgrades, contact us when booking.
What kind of food will we eat?
Indian food is a highlight. Old Delhi's street food, from jalebis to chaat, is extraordinary. The included lunch at Sheroes Hangout Cafe in Agra is a socially meaningful meal at a cafe run by acid attack survivors. Jaipur's cuisine is Rajasthani: rich gravies, dal bati churma, and vegetable dishes. Your guide will take you to quality local restaurants for independently sourced meals.
Can you cater for vegetarian or vegan diets?
Yes, we are delighted to cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements wherever possible! Simply let us know your dietary preferences or allergies at the time of booking so our team can notify our tour leaders, hotels, and restaurants in advance. While meal options in more remote areas may be simpler, we always do our utmost to ensure you enjoy plentiful, delicious, and authentic local food throughout your adventure with us.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Drink bottled water throughout India. Don't drink tap water, and be cautious about ice in local restaurants. Stick to bottled drinks. A Water-to-Go filtered bottle is practical for reducing plastic consumption.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The small group maximum of 12 creates a very intimate group experience, and solo travellers often find this one of the best-sized groups for India: small enough to get individual guide attention, large enough to meet interesting people.
Do I have to share a room?
A single supplement is available at all properties. Some heritage properties have limited single room options, so confirm at booking.
What's the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 2, maximum 12 travellers. The small cap makes this a genuinely personal experience. Groups mix solo travellers, couples, and friends, typically with a shared interest in Indian culture and history.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures are available for couples, families, or groups wanting exclusive use of the vehicle and guide.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
Older children and teenagers who enjoy cultural sightseeing and safari will get a great deal from this tour. The tiger safari and Abhaneri step well are particularly exciting for young visitors. Check minimum age requirements at booking.
Do I need a visa for India?
Yes. UK, US, Australian, and most European passport holders can apply for an Indian e-visa online before travel. Apply well in advance of departure; processing usually takes a few days but can take longer.
What should I pack?
Modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees for temples and mosques), comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket for early Taj Mahal mornings, sunscreen, and insect repellent for Ranthambore. India uses Type C/D/M plugs. A padlock is useful for some guesthouse-style rooms.
Are any vaccinations required?
Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid are recommended for India. Check with your GP or travel health clinic at least 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. Fly into Indira Gandhi International Airport Delhi (DEL). The tour ends in Delhi. Book your own international flights once the tour is confirmed.
What about tipping?
Tipping is expected and important in India. Your guide will brief the group on current recommended amounts for local guides, drivers, and hotel staff. The Ranthambore safari driver and park tracker are customarily tipped.
Can I add a Goa extension?
Yes. A Goa extension is available after the main tour for sun, sea, and a very different side of India. Ask us for details.
Can I add Varanasi?
Yes. A Varanasi extension is available, adding one of India's holiest and most extraordinary cities. The ghats, the Ganges, and Varanasi's ancient lanes are a powerful contrast to the Golden Triangle.
Can I do a hot air balloon over Jaipur?
Yes. Hot air balloon flights over the Pink City are available as an optional activity from September 1 to May 10. The sunrise views over Amber Fort and the Jaipur skyline are spectacular.
Can I do cycling in the area?
Yes. The Spinmonkey cycling option offers guided cycling through the Agra region.
How far ahead should I book?
Book 2-3 months ahead for most departures. The small group cap of 12 means popular October-February dates fill quickly. The tour is not available July-September.
How does booking work?
Reserve online with a deposit for instant confirmation. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation and repatriation is compulsory. World Nomads is a good option.
What's your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation policy applies with charges increasing closer to departure. Full terms are in the booking conditions. UK-registered and protected by Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are sold out?
