Namibia is a country of contrasts, with the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Kalahari Desert to the south. Those embarking upon a trip to Namibia often have traditional expectations of remoteness, of endless desert and sand dunes, and while this is accurate there is also an abundance of wildlife, roaring rivers and lush wetlands, and one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world. The spectacular landscapes are as stunning as you would expect, from barren deserts and sand dunes, to rugged mountains and wild seascapes. The central highlands boast seemingly endless savannah plains that stretch all the way to Botswana and it is a culturally rich country, with a wide variety of tribes each with their own unique culture. Encounters Travel are experienced in offering unique and exciting Namibia tours. Whether you are seeking wildlife encounters, spectacular scenery or adrenalin-fuelled activities, we have a Namibia tour package to suit everyone.
There is plenty to do in Namibia if you are looking for action or adventure. Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast is known as the adventure capital of the country and draws beach lovers and surfers from around the world, with the nearby Namib-Naukluft National Park famous for quad biking and dune surfing. Trips to Namibia can even involve sky diving, and there can be nowhere more visually stunning to do it than in this glorious country. The Namib-Naukluft National Park is one of the largest parks in Africa, at an impressive 50,000 sq km. The landscapes really are breathtaking and the huge red sand dunes in the Sossusvlei desert are prime spots for sand boarding. The Namibian desert landscape is rightly admired around the world but there are also beautiful rivers such as the Orange Gariep River on the border with South Africa, and the chance to canoe down it is included on many of our Namibia tours. The Fish River Canyon is excellent for hikers, as is the Sesriem Canyon and both these experiences can be included in our Namibia tour packages.
Namibia safaris are often described as some of the best in the world and it’s easy to see why. As the grasslands are sparse in places you can more easily spot animals that often hide in dense vegetation, and the flat open plains mean you have a fantastic elevated view from our safari trucks. The panorama also makes for some incredible photos! Namibia safaris are extremely popular and the 20,000 sq km Etosha National Park is home to an incredible abundance of wildlife, from big game to rare birds and everything in between, and offers some of the most unique game viewing in Africa. There are a number of endangered species in the park, including cheetah and black rhino, as well as the more common giraffe, zebra, antelope, leopard and wildebeest. We recommend your guides park near a waterhole to see the lions and elephants wander past to take a drink!
Our Namibia tours also offer a visit to the capital Windhoek, a smart modern and manageable city which is easy to explore on foot. Modern high rise towers stand alongside castles and cathedrals and there is a wide variety of delicious cuisine on offer. We also include some lesser known but equally important places on our tour itineraries, including the Petrified Forest, the White Lady rock painting and the Brandberg Mountain which is spiritually very significant to the local tribal cultures. For those wanting to soak up the local culture, many of the Namibia tours offered by Encounters also include spending some time with the Himba people, semi nomadic bushmen instantly recognisable by their unique red hair and skin and the intricate hairstyles.
Here at Encounters we can’t recommend Namibia highly enough. There is so much to do, see and experience, the only question is what to include on your perfect trip to Namibia!
