Notes

Hotel Gala Dinners
Many of Egypt's hotels and Nile cruise boats arrange a very special gala dinner with entertainment in the evening on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Payment for these is often optional on Christmas Eve (24 Dec) but normally compulsory on New Year's Eve (31 Dec), whether you attend or not. Prices can range from around US$50 to over US$180 per person in 5-star hotels. Final decisions on prices and whether dinners are compulsory are made relatively close to the time. We aim to always select hotels that make their Gala Dinners optional, though this is not always possible, especially for New Year's Eve. Gala dinner prices are therefore not included in our prices above, but will be added to your booking if they become required. Please budget accordingly. More information is available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Sands & Seas tour?
Sands & Seas is our 11-day Egypt tour that combines the country's two most compelling environments: the ancient monuments of Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, and the coral reefs of the Red Sea at Dahab. You travel Cairo to Cairo, sleeping in 4-star hotels and on a sleeper train, with a maximum of 18 travellers. Departures run every Tuesday year-round, so it is one of our most reliably available Egypt tours.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Egypt?
Yes. Sands & Seas covers all the must-sees: the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum, Luxor temples, the Valley of the Kings, Philae, and Aswan, while adding the Red Sea as a bonus. The group cap of 18 and the use of certified Egyptologist guides throughout mean you get real depth alongside the highlights. If you want to combine pharaonic Egypt with beach and diving time, this is the tour to choose.
What is the difference between this and your other Egypt tours?
Sands & Seas (11 days) is unique in adding the Red Sea at Dahab after the Nile Valley circuit. Pharaonic Encounters (7 days) focuses purely on Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan without the Red Sea stop. Nubian Adventure (9 days) goes deeper into Nubian culture. Discover Egypt (10 days) swaps the Nile cruise for a felucca and ends at Hurghada. Egypt Express (8 days) is the fastest route through the key sites. Choose Sands & Seas if beach time is as important to you as the pharaonic monuments.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
Egypt is a year-round destination. October to April brings cooler, more comfortable temperatures for sightseeing in Cairo and the Nile Valley. May to September is hot, with daytime temperatures in Luxor regularly exceeding 38 degrees C, though the Red Sea section at Dahab stays pleasant almost year-round. The tour departs every Tuesday, so you have maximum flexibility.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Egypt tours around. But Sands & Seas includes a certified Egyptologist guide for the entire 11 days, 4-star hotel accommodation throughout, an overnight sleeper train between Cairo and Aswan, all site entrance fees, and the Red Sea resort days at Dahab. When you add up the sleeper train berth, the entrance fees at Giza, the Karnak complex, the Valley of the Kings, and Philae Temple, the cost of a good Egyptologist guide, and comfortable 4-star rooms, the all-in price makes strong sense.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: all accommodation in 4-star hotels and one overnight sleeper train; all transport and transfers; 24-hour airport arrival and departure transfer service; services of a certified Egyptologist guide throughout; all site entrance fees; and meals as indicated in the itinerary.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
Not included: international flights, Egypt visa, travel insurance, meals not listed, drinks and personal expenses, tipping kitty, and tour guide tip. Your guide will brief current tipping kitty amounts at the start of the tour. Budget a daily personal allowance for lunches on non-included days, drinks, and shopping.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. You can reserve your place with a deposit, or use our reserve-now-pay-later option. The full balance is due eight weeks before departure. Payment options include card, bank transfer, or cheque.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Easy to moderate. Most sightseeing involves walking on flat or paved surfaces around temple complexes and museum floors. The heat in summer can be draining. The Red Sea section at Dahab is entirely relaxed. No special fitness level is required, but you should be comfortable walking several kilometres per day on sometimes uneven ground.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Sands & Seas is accessible to travellers of all ages. The sites are generally flat and walkable, your guide manages the pace, and the 4-star hotels provide comfortable resting places. Older travellers make up a significant part of our Egypt groups. If you have specific health considerations, let us know in advance so we can flag anything relevant.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
The main challenges are uneven temple floors, steps at some sites, and climbing in and out of vehicles and the sleeper train berth. If you use a wheelchair or have significant mobility limitations, some sites will be difficult to access. Contact us before booking to discuss which parts of the itinerary may need adapting, or to explore a private departure with a customised route.
How hot does it actually get?
In summer (June to August) Luxor and Aswan regularly exceed 40 degrees C in the middle of the day. We schedule sightseeing for the cooler morning and late afternoon hours wherever possible. A sun hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water are essential. Dahab on the Red Sea coast is slightly cooler thanks to the sea breeze. In winter (November to February) temperatures are very pleasant, in the mid-20s.
Is Egypt safe to visit right now?
Egypt's main tourist sites are among the most visited and well-protected destinations in Africa. Millions of travellers visit Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and the Red Sea resorts safely every year. Check your government's official travel advice before booking, as conditions can change. Your Egyptologist guide and local reps monitor the situation and will brief you on any current local considerations at the start of the tour.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. Solo women travellers regularly join our Egypt tours. Travelling in a group with a professional Egyptologist guide means you are never navigating the souks or sites alone. Be prepared for attention in busy markets, particularly in the Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Your guide will advise on appropriate dress, which typically means covering shoulders and knees at religious and historical sites.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide can help you access local medical facilities. Cairo and Luxor have private hospitals familiar with international travellers. Dahab has clinics that deal with diving-related incidents and general ailments. Travel insurance covering medical expenses and evacuation is compulsory on this tour. Your guide will have emergency contact numbers throughout.
Will I be hassled by vendors and touts?
Some persistent selling is part of the experience in Egyptian markets and near major sites. Your guide manages this well and will steer you through busy areas. A calm, firm 'la shukran' (no thank you) and walking on works in most situations. In Dahab the vibe is notably relaxed and low-pressure.
What is the accommodation actually like?
All hotels are 4-star, with en-suite rooms, air conditioning, and swimming pools. The Nile Valley hotels are well-located close to the main sites. In Dahab you stay at a comfortable Red Sea resort hotel. The one overnight sleeper train has private berths with linen, air conditioning, and a simple dinner and breakfast service.
What is the sleeper train like?
The overnight sleeper train runs between Cairo and Aswan (or Luxor), cutting out a full day of travel. Your berth is a private cabin with fold-down beds, linen, and air conditioning. Dinner and breakfast are included in the sleeper service. It is a classic Egyptian travel experience and a comfortable way to cover a long distance while you sleep.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Yes, all the 4-star hotels on this tour have Wi-Fi. Connection speeds vary by location, and Dahab's more remote resort setting may be slower than Cairo. Egyptian SIM cards are inexpensive and provide good data coverage if you need reliable connectivity throughout.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
This tour is set at 4-star level throughout. If you would like 5-star hotels or a Nile cruise section added, we can arrange a private departure with upgraded accommodation. Contact us for a quote.
What kind of food will we eat?
Egyptian cuisine is rich and varied. Expect ful medames (slow-cooked fava beans), ta'ameya (Egyptian falafel), grilled kofta and kebabs, koshari (Egypt's beloved street dish of pasta, rice, and lentils), fresh flatbreads, and an abundance of mezze. At the Red Sea in Dahab, fresh seafood is excellent. Breakfast buffets at 4-star hotels are generous and include both Egyptian and continental options.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water in Egypt is not safe to drink. All hotels provide bottled water, and your guide will advise on safe sources. We recommend bringing a Water-to-Go filter bottle to reduce your reliance on single-use plastic throughout the trip.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. Solo travellers frequently join this tour and it has a sociable structure: the group cap of 18 keeps it manageable, and the mix of sightseeing, train travel, and beach time at Dahab gives plenty of opportunity to connect with fellow travellers.
Do I have to share a room?
The tour is priced on twin-share. Solo travellers are paired with a same-sex room-mate wherever possible. If no match is available, a single supplement applies. Book the single supplement in advance if you want your own room guaranteed throughout.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 18 travellers. The demographic is typically a mix of solo travellers, couples, and small groups of friends. Most are from English-speaking countries and range from their late 20s through to their 60s.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. The tour can be run privately for your own group on almost any date. Private departures also allow you to upgrade accommodation or customise the itinerary. Contact us for a private quote.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
There is no minimum age stated for this tour, but the pace and heat of sightseeing in Luxor and Aswan can be challenging for young children. If you are travelling with children, please speak to us before booking so we can advise on suitability and any adjustments.
Do I need a visa for Egypt?
Most nationalities including British, US, EU, Australian, and New Zealand can obtain an Egypt e-visa in advance through the official visa2egypt portal, or a visa on arrival at Cairo International Airport. We recommend applying in advance for a smoother arrival. Check current requirements and fees on the official Egyptian government visa website.
What should I pack?
Light, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits. A sun hat and high-factor sunscreen are essential. Comfortable walking shoes for uneven temple floors. A light layer for air-conditioned spaces and cooler evenings. Swimwear for Dahab. Egypt uses Type C two-round-pin plugs at 220V. If you plan to snorkel at Dahab, bring your own mask and snorkel for hygiene.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are currently compulsory for Egypt, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are recommended. Malaria is not generally present in tourist areas. Consult your GP or a travel clinic before departure.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No, you book your own international flights to Cairo (CAI) or Sphinx International Airport (SPX). We can suggest suitable flight options on request. The tour starts and ends in Cairo.
What about tipping?
A tipping kitty is collected at the start of the tour in cash to cover hotel staff, drivers, and local guides. Your main Egyptologist guide is tipped separately at your discretion at the end of the tour. Your guide will brief current suggested amounts on Day 1.
Can I add Abu Simbel?
Yes. Abu Simbel, the spectacular temple complex of Ramses II relocated from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, is available as an optional early-morning excursion from Aswan. Book in advance through us or locally with your guide.
Can I do the hot air balloon over Luxor?
Yes. A sunrise hot air balloon flight over the West Bank of the Nile, drifting above the Valley of the Kings and the temples, is one of the most memorable optional extras on the tour. It is bookable locally through your guide.
Can I extend my time in Cairo or at the Red Sea?
Yes. Extra nights in Cairo before or after the tour can be arranged, with airport transfers included on those additional days. If you want more time at the Red Sea, speak to us about adding extra nights in Dahab or combining with another tour.
How far ahead should I book?
The tour departs every Tuesday year-round, so availability is good. Peak winter season departures (October to April) book up earliest. We recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance for winter dates, and 4-6 weeks ahead for summer departures.
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form via the Dates and Prices tab on the tour page. Pay a deposit, pay in full, or hold a reservation. Full balance is due 8 weeks before departure. Confirmation is instant and you will receive all joining details by email.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and repatriation. World Nomads Travel Insurance covers more than 150 adventure activities and is a popular choice among our travellers.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation fee applies. Full terms are set out in our booking conditions. We are a UK-registered company and your payments are financially protected through Trust My Travel.
What if my dates are already sold out?
Contact us to join the waitlist, or we can arrange a private departure on alternative dates. Other Egypt tours that cover similar ground include Pharaonic Encounters (7 days) and Discover Egypt (10 days).

We had such an amazing experience on the Sands and Seas tour to Cairo! I was a little hesitant with the reviews beforehand - but know that if there were any negative things about the trip before - they have all been addressed and improved. We stayed in amazing hotels and felt incredibly safe the entire time. Waleed Kamouna was the most informative and amazing tour guide we had ever had. Our tour group consisted of around 16 people, which was the perfect amount. Great tour buses, awesome drivers, etc... Hot Air Ballooning over Luxor was definitely a MUST-DO! Seriously cannot say how happy I am that we went on this tour!

We had such a fantastic vacation in Egypt! We couldn’t it have planned this ourselves - so many venues, all smoothly scheduled with all transfers arranged. There was always a guide to make sure things went well, and they did indeed make everything work. From the pyramids to Luxor and the new amazing Grand Egyptian Museum, we always had a knowledgeable local certified guide who added immensely to our understanding. The Nile cruise boat was excellent as well, comfortable and fun!
I had many questions prior to and after booking, and the company provided excellent communication and support. Highly recommend!!

My friend and I purchased the 'Egypt Express Tour' provided by Encounters Travel and I must say, it was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life! We were assigned an agent from the company by the name of 'Mariska Knoesen'. She was very professional, proficient, and answered all of my questions and concerns, via e-mail, in a timely fashion. Upon our arrival in Egypt, we were greeted by a friendly team from Encounters Travel, who were all fluent in English. They assisted us with getting Egyptian visas and made exiting the airport easy. In total, it ended up being 9 of us grouped together. Our main tour guide was a gentleman by the name of 'Ashrafbehairy', whom we all referred to as "Ash" for short. HE WAS AMAZING!! We could not have asked for a better tour guide for our trip. He was very humble, kind, and knowledgeable. He accompanied us from Cairo to Aswan and then to Luxor and back to Cairo, via train. We visited several attractions such as the Pyramids, Philae Temple, Edfu Temple, and the Valley of the Kings (just to name a few). While at each sight, Ash explained its history to us and was able to answer all questions. He assisted with translation (Arabic and English) when needed, got us snacks, provided water, and took me to the shop to get items I desperately needed (sunblock and aloe lol). He even gave everyone a souvenir keychain at the end of our trip. Most importantly, we all felt SAFE! There is so much more I could say about this trip, but I will end by saying that it was honestly a great experience! I highly recommend purchasing this tour from Encounters Travel.

From the time we landed in Cairo we were treated as VIP’s. Nadine our Tour leader kept on checking on us throughout the journey. We were fortunate to have Fayed and Hossam as the tour guides, they took their time to explain the sites throughout each excursion. Everyone made us feel safe and well looked after.

Wonderful time with friends. The land of Egypt is hard to describe in a few words. The history is so immense I will need to come back again and again. The accommodations were above par and the people from Encounters Travel are very helpful. I would your with them again.

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Transport

Our trips feature a mix of different transport options. We want you to feel like you’re really experiencing the country you’re travelling through, but at the same time we want you to finish journeys refreshed enough to enjoy the next stage of the tour. In Egypt we do not use any public tourist buses or overnight coach journeys as we know that people don't sleep on board and end up very tired for the following few days. All the vehicles we use are air-conditioned, many are fitted with speed limiters, and all are inspected and checked daily. Some 4WD vehicles used on desert safaris may not always have air conditioning where they are only used for short periods.

For the overnight train journey from Cairo to Luxor (approx. 9 hrs) this tour uses the overnight sleeper train. This train has private twin berth cabins with large seats and fold-down beds with sheets, pillow & blanket. The lockable cabins also have a washbasin and storage cupboard, and an airline tray-style evening meal and breakfast is included. If you wish you may upgrade this journey to internal flights. You can also upgrade the Hurghada-Cairo drive to a flight if you wish - the normal drive takes around 7 hours.
