Frequently Asked Questions

Why book the Jordan Express tour?
Jordan Express is our compact 6-day small-group introduction to Jordan's greatest highlights, running from Amman to Amman. In under a week you experience a street food tasting in Amman (Kunefa, sugar cane juice, falafel), the intact Roman ruins at Jerash, the Amman Citadel and Roman Theatre, the Kings Highway with Madaba's Byzantine mosaic map and Mount Nebo, the crusader castle at Shobak, a full day in Petra guided through the Siq to the Treasury, a Wadi Rum jeep safari with a night in a Bedouin camp, and floating on the Dead Sea. Groups run 2-18 people.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to Jordan?
Absolutely. Jordan Express was designed to give first-timers the best possible introduction to the country. You see everything on the bucket list, in a logical order, with a knowledgeable guide who handles all logistics.
What is the difference between this and your other Jordan tours?
Jordan Express is 6 days and covers the core highlights. Best of Jordan is 7 days and adds As-Salt and Bethany. A Week in Jordan is 8 days and adds the Desert Castles. Jordan and Egypt Explorer is 14 days spanning both countries. Jordan and Egypt Express is 13 days. Petra and Dubai connects the region with a UAE stay. If this is your first visit and you have limited time, Jordan Express delivers the essentials efficiently.
What is the best time of year to do the Jordan Express tour?
September to November is the peak season: comfortable temperatures (18-28°C), clear skies, and Petra at its most atmospheric. Spring (March-May) is also excellent. July and August are very hot at Petra (35-40°C) but manageable with early starts. The tour runs year-round.
Why does this tour cost what it does?
We get it, you can find cheaper Jordan tours. But Jordan Express includes 4-star hotel accommodation, one night in a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum, 5 breakfasts, 1 dinner, all transport, guided sightseeing with entrance fees, Wild Jordan Centre visit, and an experienced local guide throughout. The Petra entrance fee alone is significant, and it is included.
What is actually included in the price?
Included: 4-star hotel accommodation throughout plus 1 night in a Bedouin desert camp in Wadi Rum, all transport, English-speaking guide, 5 breakfasts and 1 dinner, Wadi Rum jeep safari, all entrance fees, and 24-hour arrival transfer.
What is NOT included and how much extra should I budget?
International flights, Jordan visa (Jordan Pass is recommended as it includes the visa fee and most entrance fees for stays of 3+ nights), travel insurance, tips, most meals, personal expenses, and any optional extras such as Petra by Night, Petra Kitchen cooking class, or Wadi Rum activities. Your guide will brief you on current amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve with a deposit and pay the balance 8 weeks before departure. You can also hold a reservation without payment while you finalise plans.
How physically demanding is the Jordan Express tour?
Moderate. Petra involves a 2-3 hour guided walk through the Siq (a narrow 2m-wide, 200m-tall canyon) and up to the Treasury and other monuments. You can choose how much further you go: the Monastery is 800 steps and optional. Wadi Rum involves a jeep safari rather than hiking. The rest of the tour is gentle.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
Jordan Express is popular with travellers of all ages. The Petra walk can be done at your own pace and a horse-drawn carriage is available from the main gate to the Siq entrance. The Dead Sea is completely effortless. Let us know about any concerns.
What if I have mobility issues or a medical condition?
Petra's uneven cobblestone path through the Siq and the site beyond can be challenging for those with significant mobility limitations. The Dead Sea float is accessible to most people. Contact us before booking to discuss which elements might need adapting.
Is Jordan safe to visit right now?
Jordan is consistently one of the Middle East's most stable and welcoming destinations. It hosts more international tourists per capita than most of its neighbours. Check current UK Foreign Office advice before travel. Your guide will provide a full safety briefing on arrival.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Jordan is among the safer destinations in the region for solo female travellers. Jordanians are genuinely hospitable. Some low-level attention from vendors can occur at tourist sites, which your guide will help manage. Dressing modestly (covered shoulders and knees) outside tourist areas is advised.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Amman has excellent hospitals with international-standard care. Your guide has first aid training and local medical contacts throughout the route. Travel insurance with medical cover is compulsory.
What is the accommodation actually like?
You stay in 4-star hotels throughout, with the exception of one night in a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum. Hotel rooms are en-suite with air conditioning. The Bedouin camp has comfortable tent accommodation with shared or private bathrooms depending on the camp.
What is the Wadi Rum Bedouin camp like?
A night in a Wadi Rum Bedouin camp is one of the tour highlights. You sleep in a furnished tent in the desert under one of the most star-filled skies you will ever see. A traditional Jordanian dinner is served, and mornings bring a spectacular sunrise over the red sandstone landscape.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is available in the city hotels. The Wadi Rum Bedouin camp has limited or no connectivity, which is part of the experience.
Can I upgrade?
A Superior 4/5-star accommodation option is available on this tour. Contact our sales team for details and pricing.
What kind of food will we eat?
Jordanian cuisine is a highlight: mezze spreads with hummus, falafel, and fattoush, mansaf (lamb cooked in fermented yogurt), and the street food Amman is famous for, including warm Kunefa cheese pastry and fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. Hotel breakfasts are buffet-style.
Can you cater for vegetarian vegan or gluten-free diets?
Vegetarian options are plentiful throughout Jordan. Vegan and gluten-free diets are manageable with advance notice. Inform us when you book.
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water in Jordan is technically treated but we recommend sticking to bottled water or using a Water-to-Go filter bottle to reduce plastic waste. Hotels provide bottled water.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Very popular with solo travellers. Jordan is a safe and friendly destination and the small group of 2-18 means you quickly connect with fellow travellers.
Do I have to share a room?
The price is based on twin-sharing. A single supplement is available. We will try to match solo travellers of the same sex.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Groups run 2-18 people. Jordan Express attracts a wide age range of couples, friends, and solo travellers.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures on flexible dates are available. Contact our sales team.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
The tour has no minimum age listed but the content (Petra walk, Wadi Rum jeep safari, Dead Sea float) works well for older children. Contact us to discuss a private family departure.
Do I need a visa for Jordan?
Most nationalities can get a Jordan visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport, but the Jordan Pass (available online before travel) is highly recommended: it includes the visa fee for stays of 3+ nights and covers entrance fees to most major sites including Petra.
What should I pack?
Pack for warm days and cool evenings. Modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) is required at religious sites and appreciated in local areas. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Petra. Jordan uses Type B and F plugs at 230V. Bring sunscreen and a hat for Petra and Wadi Rum.
Are any vaccinations required?
Recommended vaccinations for Jordan include Tetanus and Hepatitis A. No malaria risk. Consult your GP or travel clinic for current advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. The tour starts and finishes at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) in Amman. We can suggest flights on request.
What about tipping?
Tipping is appreciated in Jordan. Your guide will advise on appropriate amounts for the guide, driver, and camp staff at the start of the tour.
Can I do Petra by Night?
Yes. Petra by Night is a magical optional experience where the Siq and Treasury are lit by thousands of candles. It runs three nights a week and can be booked through your guide locally.
Can I add a Petra Kitchen cooking class?
Yes. Petra Kitchen offers a hands-on Jordanian cooking class in Petra town. Book in advance or through your guide.
Can I do extra activities in Wadi Rum?
Yes. Camel rides, stargazing sessions, hot air balloon flights, and quad biking are all available as optional extras in Wadi Rum. Ask your guide on arrival.
Can I add the Wadi Mujib siq trail?
Yes. The Wadi Mujib gorge walk is available as an optional extra, typically between April and October when water levels allow. Ask your guide about current conditions.
How far ahead should I book?
September to November departures fill quickly. Book two to three months ahead for peak season dates.
How does booking work?
Complete the online form on the Dates and Prices page. Pay a deposit or hold a reservation. Balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, compulsory. Must cover medical expenses and repatriation. World Nomads is a recommended option.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding scale of charges applies. Full terms are in our booking conditions. Trust My Travel financial protection covers your funds.

This was a solo trip for me and it started in Jordan with my guide, Omar Almansi. Omar had such an amazing presence and spirit and I knew it was going to be as amazing as I was dreaming. Little Petra, Petra, camping in Wadi Rum… it was all incredible. Omar knew the significance of people seeing such incredible sites and his guiding did not disappoint! My trip then went in to Egypt. WOW. It’s hard to find the words. The pyramids, tombs, temples, Abu Simbel, all of it was unreal. My guide there, Ayman Kenawy, was unbelievable. His vast knowledge was inspiring but his way of navigating and making the trip memorable for everyone he guided was his true gift! As a solo female traveler people worry about me but I never felt worried at all. Both Omar and Ayman looked out for me and made me feel so welcome. They never steered me wrong. Cairo was much busier than Amman so I was grateful for all the extra effort that made my trip so easy I could focus on the magic all around me. This was a very deep and profound journey for me and it exceeded my expectations.

Couldn’t recommend Enocunters Travel any more highly. We traveled all over Jordan and Egypt and it was seamless. From booking through departure it was a wonderful experience. Our tours guides Yassar and Ayman were professional, knowledgeable and beyond helpful. Our drivers, especially Mohannad in Jordan, but honestly all of them, were safe, considerate and enthusiastic. We saw so many things and made memories to last a life time. Everyone was so tolerant of our crazy amounts of luggage (wasn’t our only trip) and even though we took trains and boats, it wasn’t too much of an issue. I feel like we learned so much that I could teach a class of Egyptian history at this point!

My husband and I previously used Encounters Travel for a vacation to Egypt and Greece and therefore jumped at the opportunity to use them for our journey to Jordan. The expectations bar was high given our previous trips being absolutely amazing and something we wanted to replicate in many areas. Our trip to Jordan delivered on those expectations! From the encyclopedic knowledge of our guide, Omar, who explained the historical significance of various sites encompassing the folklore of the civilizations responsible for such wonders as the temples, amphitheaters around Amman, As-Salt, Jerash, all the way to the remoteness of Wadi Rum. Plus, who could forget the marvels of Petra with its Hellenistic design. The highlights were many. One of which was floating on the waters of the Dead Sea being magical. Omar also kept the entire group updated via What's App.

One improvement or thing to note is the preservation of water in Jordan might mean if you're taking a shower at a particular hour expect it to be freezing cold. During the trip, we were provided bottled water; however, the water was never cold. It would have been nice if the refrigerated unit used to hold the water on the coach bus worked and would keep the water cold.

The expectations for the culinary choices were something my husband and I were particularly thrilled with offerings such as Makloubeh. Nothing could beat the desert item called Kanafeh which was scrumptious and if you're into Baklava, there is no shortage of places to purchase.

Encounters Travel gets both thumbs up for the trips and locations they put together and we will definitely use them for future travel adventures.

I can't say enough about what a great tour this was. I was a solo traveler. I was picked up at the airport and delivered to my hotel. All instructions were detailed. I started in Jordan and added the pre-tour days in Bethlehem with guide Amer. Amer was such a great guide, I was able to enjoy a wonderful lunch in Salt with him. My guide in Jordan, Omar Almansi was so good! He talked about the history, culture, foods, people, land, even his family with such passion. He was marvelous! Each day I was picked up at the hotel and taken to the tours and excursions. All incredible! If you can, request Omar. Omar's a master at taking great iphone pics also! I then flew to Egypt, where a guide picked me up at the airport and then started my tours. My guide was Ahmed. He explained the history and people so well. I was able to enjoy Egypt, from the north end to the south. We toured so much. Took the sleeper train from Cairo to Aswan. That was a fun adventure! It included dinner and a breakfast of rolls and tea. Each of my guides had so much knowledge about the countries and area. I loved this tour! I spoke with Gavin through Encounters Travel. He answered all of my questions, returned all of my emails. The tour was absolutely amazing! Thank you Encounters Travel!

We traveled to Jordan and Egypt! Great experience but what made it unforgettable was our tour guide, Ayman, in Egypt. He was so knowledgeable, educated, funny but overall a nice, good person!! If I was to ever go back to Egypt, I would definitely ask for him as my tour guide!! 5 stars for him!!!

Accommodation

The hotels and accommodations listed below are the ones we most often use on this tour. From time to time we may exchange these for similar properties at the same level.

Options

Our tours are designed to include all that you need to enjoy a really special time in the country you're visiting. However, we do also offer some extra options to complement the tour and add some additional sightseeing or activities, or some extra time at either end of the tour.

All accommodation based options (e.g. Single supplements, extra nights, upgrades) should be booked and paid for in advance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. Most other options can be booked and paid for in advance or while you are on the tour, though we recommend booking in advance to ensure there are no issues with availability.

Most options are priced the same throughout the year, though some may have seasonal pricing or minimum number requirements - our sales team will advise the final pricing based on your travel date and number of passengers on your booking.

Tour Notes

The detailed Tour Notes below provide important practical information about how the tour runs, what to expect, and how to prepare for your holiday.

1. Accommodation

We use good quality mid-range hotels on this tour. Accommodation is based on twin or double en-suite rooms with air conditioning. All couples will stay in a private double room.

An upgrade is also available to local 5-star hotels in Amman and Petra if you would like a more luxurious stay - you will find both our standard and superior accommodation options available to book from the dates and prices tab. These can be considered basic international 5-star level in Amman, and decent 4-star level in Petra. Typical hotels used are the Landmark or Le Grand in Amman which are modern style hotels, and the Old Village Resort or Hyatt Zaman in Petra which are more traditional characterful properties.

In Wadi Rum we use a comfortable Bedouin camp located on the desert sands, against the cliffs. Accommodation is in permanent traditional goat hair tents with their own bathroom, proper beds and all bedding provided You can also bring a sleeping bag if you wish, and find a sheltered spot on the rocks on the edge of the camp and sleep under the stars.

Please check the Single Room Supplement option for details on room sharing options and charges for solo travellers on this tour.
