Why book The Garden Route - 10 days tour?
This 10-day Cape Town to Cape Town shoestring tour is one of the best-value ways to experience the full scope of South Africa's Western and Eastern Cape. You get 2 free days in Cape Town to explore Table Mountain, Robben Island and Camps Bay on your own terms, then the group heads off together for African penguins at Betties Bay, the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas, Route 62 wine tasting, an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn, canoeing and hiking in Wilderness National Park, the Knysna Heads viewpoint, the world's highest bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge (optional), Tsitsikamma National Park, and a Big 5 game drive in Addo Elephant National Park. Groups are small (max 12) and you choose your accommodation level: backpacker hostel or deluxe guesthouse.
Is this tour suitable for first-time visitors to South Africa?
Absolutely. Cape Town and the Garden Route together are one of the world's great road trip combinations, and having a knowledgeable local guide-driver handle the logistics means you get the most from each day. The 2 free days in Cape Town at the start give you breathing room to acclimatise and explore independently.
What is the difference between this and your other South Africa tours?
The Garden Route - 10 days is the extended version of the Garden Route - 8 days tour. Both start and end in Cape Town and follow the same Garden Route corridor, but the 10-day version includes the additional Addo Elephant National Park Big 5 safari and extra time at key stops. If you have the time, the 10-day version offers significantly more.
What is the best time of year to do this tour?
The Garden Route is one of the most weather-consistent regions of South Africa, with relatively moderate temperatures year-round. Spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May) are the most popular. Whale season runs July-November, when Southern Right Whales are visible from Hermanus. Summer (December-February) is warm and sunny but also busiest.

Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Reserve your place with a deposit, hold a reservation and pay later, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
How physically demanding is this tour?
Light to moderate. The canoeing down the Touw River in Wilderness is gentle. The hiking in Wilderness National Park is on a boardwalk to a waterfall. The Tsitsikamma coastal trail is easy. The game drive in Addo is vehicle-based. Optional activities like the 216m Bloukrans bungee jump and the 10,000ft skydive are adrenaline activities, not fitness-based. The longest travel days involve about 4-5 hours in a minibus.
What if I am older than the rest of the group?
The Garden Route itinerary is accessible for older travellers. The most physically demanding element is the optional bungee jump or skydive, which are entirely opt-in. The included activities are all manageable for a reasonably fit person of any age.
What if I have mobility issues?
Most included activities are accessible. The Wilderness National Park canoe and boardwalk hike require basic mobility. The Addo game drive is by vehicle. Backpacker hostels sometimes have steps between rooms. If you have specific mobility concerns, contact us before booking.
Is South Africa safe to visit?
South Africa has areas of significant crime, but the Garden Route and the tourist corridors on this itinerary, from Cape Town through to Addo, are among the safest parts of the country. Use standard urban precautions in Cape Town (do not walk alone at night in unfamiliar areas, keep valuables out of sight). Your guide will brief you fully on arrival.
Is it safe for women travelling solo?
Yes. The shoestring group format means you travel with a mixed international group and a local guide at all times outside of the 2 free days in Cape Town. Cape Town has the same precautions as any major city.
What happens if I get sick on tour?
Your guide can help access medical assistance. Cape Town has excellent private medical facilities. The Garden Route corridor has clinics in most towns. Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is compulsory.
Do I need to worry about malaria on this tour?
No. The Garden Route and Cape Town are malaria-free regions. No prophylactics are needed for this itinerary.
What is the accommodation actually like?
Two tiers are available. Backpacker hostels offer dormitory or en-suite twin/double rooms in well-run social hostels with communal kitchens and lounges. Deluxe guesthouses and boutique hotels offer private en-suite rooms with breakfast and a more intimate atmosphere. You choose your tier at booking. On game-farm night near Oudtshoorn you stay in rustic on-farm accommodation.
Will I have Wi-Fi?
Most backpacker hostels and all deluxe guesthouses on the route have Wi-Fi. Some game farm accommodation may have limited connectivity.
Can I upgrade?
Yes. The deluxe guesthouse and boutique hotel tier is the upgrade option within this tour. Contact us if you want further customisation or a private departure with fully tailored accommodation.
What kind of food will we eat?
South Africa blends British-influenced hearty cooking with Cape Malay spice traditions and excellent local produce. The wine tasting on Route 62 gives you a sense of the Western Cape's world-class viticulture. In Knysna, fresh seafood (particularly oysters) is a local specialty. The included dinners at guesthouses tend to be generous South African-style meals.
Can you cater for vegetarian
vegan
Is it safe to drink the water?
Tap water is safe to drink throughout the Garden Route and Cape Town. South Africa has a high-quality municipal water supply in this region. Still, a refillable bottle is recommended to reduce plastic waste.
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. The shoestring format is particularly popular with solo travellers in their 20s and 30s who want to meet others on the road. The backpacker hostel tier actively encourages social interaction. 2 free days in Cape Town let you settle in at your own pace before the group route begins.
Do I have to share a room?
It depends on your chosen tier. Backpacker shared dorm means multi-bed room sharing with other guests. Backpacker twin/double gives you a private or shared-twin room within a hostel. Deluxe guesthouse gives you a private en-suite room. Note that airport transfers for the Garden Route are from a central Cape Town pick-up location, not door-to-door.
What is the group size and who else will be on the trip?
Minimum 4, maximum 12. The Garden Route tours attract a young, international mix of solo travellers, couples and small groups of friends, predominantly from the UK, Europe, Australia and North America.
Can I book this as a private tour?
Yes. Private departures on any date are available and allow full itinerary customisation.
Is this tour suitable for kids?
There is no stated minimum age, and the activities (penguins, ostrich farm, canoeing, Addo safari) are genuinely engaging for children. The optional adrenaline activities (bungee, skydive) have minimum age and weight requirements. Contact us for family-specific advice.
Do I need a visa for South Africa?
Most Western passport holders, including US, UK, Australian and EU citizens, do not need a visa for South Africa for stays under 90 days. Check current requirements on the South African Department of Home Affairs website.
What should I pack?
Light layers for warm days (20-30 degrees C along the coast, cooler evenings inland). A waterproof for the coast and national parks. Comfortable walking shoes. Swimwear for beaches, resort pools and Tsitsikamma. Sun protection. South Africa uses Type M (three-round-pin) plugs at 220-230V. An adaptor is essential for most non-South African devices.
Are any vaccinations required?
No vaccinations are required for the Garden Route region of South Africa (it is a malaria-free zone). Hepatitis A is generally recommended. Consult your GP or a travel clinic for current advice.
Do I need to book international flights through you?
No. You fly into and out of Cape Town International Airport. Note that airport transfers are not door-to-door: arrivals and departures are from a central Cape Town location. If you need a transfer directly from the airport on Day 1, please let us know.
What about tipping?
Tips for the guide-driver are not included. Your guide will advise on typical amounts at the start of the tour.
Can I do shark cage diving?
Yes. Shark cage diving is available as an optional extra on Day 4, during the Hermanus stop. It involves an early morning departure and you rejoin the group for the afternoon. Pre-booking is strongly recommended as space is limited.
Can I do the Bloukrans bungee jump?
Yes. The 216-metre Bloukrans bungee jump (the world's highest commercial bungee) is an optional extra on Day 7. Those who prefer to skip it continue to Tsitsikamma National Park.
Can I do a whale watching trip?
Yes, if travelling between July and November, whale watching boat trips from Hermanus are available as an optional extra. Hermanus is one of the world's best land-based whale watching spots.
Can I do a tandem skydive?
Yes. A 10,000ft tandem skydive is available at Mossel Bay on Day 9, along with sandboarding on South Africa's longest dune and a zipline over the ocean.
How far ahead should I book?
The Garden Route is popular throughout the year. Booking 4-8 weeks ahead is usually sufficient, though longer during South African school holidays and the Northern Hemisphere summer (December-January and July-August).
How does booking work?
Complete the online reservation form on the Dates & Prices page, selecting your accommodation tier. Pay a deposit, hold a reservation, or pay in full. The balance is due 8 weeks before departure.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is compulsory. It must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation. If you plan optional activities like skydiving or bungee jumping, check your policy covers these. World Nomads is our recommended provider.
What is your cancellation policy?
A sliding-scale cancellation fee applies. Full terms are in the booking conditions. We are UK-registered and financial protection is provided through Trust My Travel.
