Tips

  • Remove your shoes before entering a mosque and cover your head and shoulders.
  • Prepare to haggle as bargaining is expected by vendors and is part of the local shopping experience.
  • Eat only with your right hand as the left hand is used for ablutions in the Egyptian culture.
  • During the festival of Ramadan, the fasting month, do not eat or drink in public.
  • Do not touch someone from the opposite sex when you are in a public place.
  • Learn a few Arabic words so you can speak to the locals when exploring the country.
  • Keep small change with you (LE5 and LE10 notes) to tip people and to buy small items.
  • Do not drink the tap water as it is highly chlorinated and can give you an upset stomach.
